Title: Dual point distributor ?
Post by: grgic on July 08, 2004, 09:10:04 PM
I have a 72 with a 2.0 I just put in a dual point dist and i am not sure how to set the dwell. It came with the points in it (used) and it runs good. if you check the dwell on each point it is about 26 but if you check them together it's 39.8
I know whith a stock dist. it should be 40. Do you go with total dwell or individual. If it is individuall should it be 40 or something else.

The fact part: The dual point dist  does not fire twice on one cylinder. It uses one set of points to open the circut and another to close the circut so...set the dwell using both points installed & working.

The guessing part: After installing an aftermarket dist, the factory manual probably is a bad source of info and you should contact the manufacture (Mallory I assume?) for any recommened dwell settings. I've owned two sets of Mallory dual points and both of them had the factory recomended point gap labeled on the outside which would set it's own dwell.

Another fact: I also replaced both dual point dist  with electronic ignition and never looked back. Both cases ran soo much better.

Read the fine print on the recomended voltage for the coil and the dist. I ran a Mazda electronic on my first 2.3 and used the stock coil and  resister, it wouldn't start very well when cold. Removed the resistor and sent a full 12 volts to the coil and problem solved.
