I HAVE AN 80 RALLYE. I NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT THE REAR END IS.I THINK IT IS EITHER A 3.08 OR A 3.18.THE DOOR CODE IS A Y.ANY HELP IS APRETIATED.
It's a 3.08.
You can download and run my VIN/Data decoder (found in the FAQ threads on this site).
Also, your tranny should have a metal tag on it. Use a cloth with a little gasoline on it to clean the tag off so you can read it. On this tag will be several codes. On the lower edge, starting at the left, should be the following:
3 08
That's the ratio of the rear end.
THANKS FOR THE INFO.NOW I CAN ADDRESS THE SPEEDO GEAR PROBLEM SO I CAN HAVE A FAIRLY ACCURATE SPEEDOMETER.
Door codes are worthless for finding out gear ratios. Mine said 3:18's and it had 3:40's. The tag on my '74 was located right on the rear axle cover bolt. After removing my cover, the rear tag was correct.

Well, both my Pintos were right on, so I wouldn't necessarily say "worthless." For those into numbers/code-abiding restorations, they're far from worthless.
However, the more accurate way to know what is actually in the vehicle is to look at the metal tag on the rear end itself (which both you and I suggest). Even so, the internals could have been swapped.
Short of removing the cover, I'd go with the tag unless/until you notice a disparity.
