There was an ad in my local paper today for a 1974 pinto shell + 2 - 2.3l engines 1 round port and 1 D port. does anyone know what this means or what the difference is?

There is a long version and a short version answer. I will give you the short version for now. There are 2 types of D port heads. there is a closed combustion chamber and an open chamber. The open chamber was used on cars between 1981 and 1984 and the closed chamber on cars 1984 to 1988ish. The Oval port head was used on 1974-1981 cars. The D port head flows the best of the two heads with the open chamber head the best to use totaly stock. To tell the difference between the two the closed chamber has a heart shaped combustion chamber and the open has a ' D " shaped chamber.
I hope this helps.
thanks at least it gives me a rough idea
Yes the D-port head is the best if you are building a race car head (port/polish/valves) but if your going to leave the head stock, then the cheap ole oval port head is clearly the best. Look at what the mini-stock racers use. Oval port is the one they use when they must use a stock head. Many of them use a D-port intake as it flows better.
Hello, I am new to the board.
The reson Ford went to the D port from the oval was not for flow numbers but emmisions.
Most of the stock intakes are of the D port style.
they went to a D port in the head to stop fuel from puddling against the intake.
I perfer the oval port head for diffrent reasons, heavier castings will hold more mass air, also I am Turbo with EFI.
