Title: late model carpet
Post by: bobscat on April 10, 2008, 11:05:58 AM
Soooo, I noticed something the other day while driving my car that to be honest with you, I hadn't picked up on yet.  The carpet in my 79 hatchback is all one piece.  There is no split or hem on the tranny hump, and the rear piece does not have a separate piece at the rear seats.  Could this be aftermarket carpet, or is this a common thing?  I personally have never encountered this, in the eight Pintos I have owned over the years, but I don't claim whatsoever to know it all.  Just wondering if anyone else has ever seen this?

That's the first time I'd heard of a Pinto having solid carpet back there. I always thought they were manufactured in a two piece setup. Could it have possibly been replaced?

The rug in my '74 was definately one piece, and definately original. And DEFINATELY worn out!

I replaced it with aftermarket carpet, that was also 1 piece.

Same thing with me, but, my aftermarket carpet kit did come with an extra piece for something.

I have a 1980 wagon, 1 owner, stock, original, car with 1 piece carpet. I also have a 1976 pinto that had original very worn out 1 piece carpet. Modern carpet from after market suppliers that i have bought and seen are also 1 piece, but Pre-formed and Molded. If your car has 2 piece carpet with a seam accross the Trans hump, it was most likely installed by an upholstery shop.  Fitting flat carpet over that large hump and around the shifter is very difficult. I have as yet never seen a stock pinto with a 2 piece factory carpet. ....Doesn't mean there isn't one however.  Also the extra piece or flap is for the area between the rear seat cushions for later Pintos that do not have the 1 piece rear seat bottom.

Here is a picture of the carpet that someone installed into my crusing wagon.  It is a two piece that fit real well.  They installed it over the worn original carpet.  It cleaned up well and is in decent shape so it will go back in to the car when I am ready.

Thats because they were used AFTER 1973 (late 77 and later to be exact; that is when they changed the rear seat to a two part lower, and the second section of carpet covers the floor between them).
