Is there any other vehicle I can pull a Catalytic converter off of to use on my 78 Sedan? A Mercury Zepher maybe?
I had a universal cat installed for $100 from the local muffler shop. This included making it removeable like the factory one. All the ones from my parts cars were not in any better shape than the original one that was on the car.
I was actually just asking to find a cheap way to put a replacement on it. The local pick-n-pull is only asking $20 for a cat if I pull one.

Man, that is surprising. Around here where I live, people come around and buy our cats, I work part time in an exhaust shop, and if they have any guts left in them we get any where from $50 to $150 A PIECE for them. (and this is for ones that are in bad enough shape that we had to replace them)
Here in California it is ILLEGAL to sell a used CAT! It stems from poor people buying them, they (still) fail smog and some consumer protection agency comes to their rescue, thus enacting a government sanction on their sale.
This was about 3 years ago, but I bought a universal CAT for my Mazda 323. It was $55 out the door. With the rising cost of precious metals I don't doubt that the price has doubled or tripled!!!

The people that buy ours are legitimate businesses that buy all kind of cores, they recycle the catalyst inside of them. They also buy rotors, radiators, tranny cases, stuff like that.

I'm actually suprised you can buy one off the cars in the junkyard. I've always heard it was illegal for junkyards to sell them.
Their on e-bay every day cheaper than a parts house. Name brands too.
My area (VA) has been plagued recently with catalytic converter thefts :(. Several of the local car dealerships have been hit, sometimes losing 25-30 at a time. The thieves are targeting SUV/pickups more than anything else because they sit high, making the undercarriage extremely accessible. They roll under the vehicle, cut it off with a battery-operated sawsall and move on to the next vehicle in a matter of a couple minutes according to authorities :police:. So far, I have not heard of any privately-owned vehicles being hit, but it's only a matter of time I'm sure ::).
