I'm buying a 71 runabout, the hood and fenders will go on my 74 wagon. I was wondering if the 71 manual trans. will bolt up to the 2.3 in my wagon and how much trouble it will be. the 74 wagon has the auto trans. and I want to have a stick shift again. The 71 has the 2.0 engine.
Also can the large bumpers be removed to put the smaller 71 bumpers on. I like smaller ones and they are in much better shape.
thanks
I still think that '71 may be a rare trim package worth restoring instead of parting out. It may not be a "Sportsman" package, but it may be a Rally package. Is it a 2-door or a 3-door hatchback? If it's 2-door with a trunk, I'd seriously reconsider ripping parts off it right now.
For the bumper swap, all you need to do is look at the bumper posts that are connected to the frame on both cars. If the bolts that connect the bumper plate (the steel part behind the chrome) to the posts align, then the swap is fairly simple---you'll just pull the steel bumper plates and chrome as an assembly from both cars and put the smaller bumper assemblies on the wagon. My guess is that everything is the same. I just am not in the physical condition to crawl around under my cars to see right now (bad back).
As for the trannies, I do believe the manual in the '71 will bolt up to the 2.3 in the '74. I have both a '72 wagon and a '74 wagon. The '74 had its automatic pulled and a manual installed. It's exactly the same as the factory-installed manual in the '72.
It is a 3 dood hatchback, the hatchback is so rusted it came up in 2 pieces, thank you for the advice. It is nice to talk with people with most of the right answers.
Thanks again, Farmboy
The 2.0 and 2.3 bellhousing's are different. So, No it will not " bolt up". Its also a C3 ( read parts are plastic). Do your self a favor and just get a C4 with bell and use it.

My mistake---I shouldn't use the term "bolt up" that loosely. :-[
I do know that the factory installed tranny in my '72 (2.0) and the one someone put into my '74 (2.3) are the same. So it can be made to work.
