Title: what year clutch set up
Post by: volksnut on April 05, 2008, 09:28:52 PM
any difference in flywheels for the 2.3's    The motor I have is a 1987, but fitting it in an early car (1974) with 74 4 speed RAD transmission...what clutch set-up should I use, I know I have to match the splines on the disc, but how about pressure plate....the trans was originally behind a V6, so I see the input shaft has to be shortened about 1/4"....

What i gather is, your using a MustangII  rad transmision that was originally for a v6 right? i all ways thought the 2.3  and 2.8 used different bellhousings.  In any case the early MustangII 2.3 flywheel was very thick heavy mo-fo and the late model 2.3 Mustangs used a thinner wheel.  The late model  pressure plate will work with the 10 spline disc you need for the rad transmission.     As far as i can remember , the only thing you might have to adjust with this combo is lengthen the ball stud for the clutch fork., Reason being the thinner latemodel flywheel will need the fork to move farther to disengage the clutch.

yes you are right on the trans...and yes the bell housings are different, I'm using the 2.3 Mustang II bell housing, it's the same thickness as the V6 unit though just different bolt pattern, but when you bolt everything up the trans bottoms out 1/4" from seating on the bell housing, so I guess the out put shaft is longer on the V6 trans?   So I can either use the thicker flywheel with early PP...or use late flywheel/clutch with modified arm....how about the out put shaft, cut it off?

Now that i think of it, the input shaft on the rad is the same from the 2.3 and 2.8.   Make sure the pilot bearing is correct and check to see if the throwout bearing will slide on the bearing retainer. The v-8 rad trans has the different input shaft. You can use the late model flywheel with the early pressure plate and vice versa. Only thing that is specific is the clutch plate.  Only transmissions i have right now are the v-8 to compare. Jon
