Title: Looked at another '79 panel wagon today
Post by: popbumper on April 03, 2008, 02:43:03 PM
OK, I've got the blood pumping - and I am sorry I can't pull pics off of my camera right now (at work), but I wanted to share....

There is another local panel wagon for sale, at $1k. This '79 was advertised with the following accoutrements (aka "features"):

1987 Mustang II 2.3L motor
T5 1987 Thunderbird turbo coupe tranny
3:55 posi rear end
MSD ignition
Aftermarket edelbrock intake
Holley 4 barrel 750 carb
Ranger roller CAM
Milled head and mild port job
Turboflow muffler
Esslinger header

...and I had to look at it. First let me say, having had a '79 panel wagon, I fell in love with it....BUT....it was in REALLY ragged shape. Geeze, the dash was tore up, the floor had some small holes, the tranny opening was unsealed, the seats were all ripped up, the carpeting was gone, the door panels were gone, the side panels had been attached but were unsealed, the heater hoses were cut off, there was no fan blade, the speedometer was disabled, the headliner was missing, the whole body was primered (and was obviously in need of some work), the hood had a big hole cut in it (cleverly concealed by a scoop)....

...the brakes needing bleeding, the tranny linkage needed adjustment, the fuel pump was turned on by a dashboard switch, the battery box was half gone....

Now to ME, this baby is a candidate for a "frame off" restoration, and trust you me, if I had the facilities and the money, I'd have a sandblasted, bare body in two weeks. Not gonna happen.

On the other hand, this baby sounded SOOOO good - it was really awesome. Man, I never knew a 4 cylinder could be like that (my green is showing) :amazed:....and it really, really got me excited about the possibility of owning another Pinto.

As much as I would like it, $1k for this car is too far. Sure, the guy bought it for $400, and has put some parts/work into it. I see where he's coming from. But it's too, too ragged. I just can't.  ???

Besides, the wife hates them - but I don't care. I just have something for these neat little cars.

I do not think it's a Cruising Wagon. That has no port hole window  on the sides towards the back.Second you can still see the sheetmetal between the second (opening widow) and the third window. However, if you can save it do so...

I don't think it is a crusing wagon either.  There are no sport gauges, the drip rail extensions at the rear are missing, and I do not see the mounting tabs for the interior side panels.  However, those look like they are true sedan delivery panels as I do not see where the windows have been patched.  Those alone are quite desireable to someone.
