Title: Custom Pinto Taillights Please Read.
Post by: ChrisMiddleton on June 19, 2003, 11:42:45 PM

Hi Yall the 1972 pinto is just about stripped.. Im trying to get some ideas.

Would you like to see a narrowed nice and snug chrome front bumper, or a narrowed fiberglass bumper bondo'd onto the body to make it look like its a part of the body?

Would you rather see a pinto with chrome trim, no trim, or black trim?

Im also looking for ideas for making or buying custom taillights for my pinto which should I do and or which should I get?

Any other ideas for making a pinto look Sharp please post...
Maybe make my taillights and bumpers to look like the ones on this smoothy.
http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/37900/index.html

Please Help thanks, Chris
Any ideas!

I saw a silver Pinto out in cyberspace that had taillights from a '75 Mercury Comet. They looked very custom on the rear of the Pinto. I won a bid on eBay for the same taillights for my '76 Turbo project. I also toyed with the idea of '66 Mustang taillights since our horses are related, but when I saw the Comet, I fell in love with the look.

Look around, the Lil' Horse has a flat panel on the rear with pretty much square openings. this means that almost any car with a flat rear end can donate its taillights. A neat concept would be 82-92 firebird or early Buick regal somerset lights for a "wall of lights" look. this would be cool, but WAAAAY hard to do. both these cars are wider so sectioning would be necessary, that's never as easy as cut&glue.

That's the one. I remembered it was on this site where I saw it after I posted. What do you think of that look? I would like to get ahold of a little spoiler like that one too. If anyone knows where I might find such, I would appreciate knowing. Thanks, Dave.

I like the Comet tailights more than the stock ones.
Ive thought about it and I cant come up with something that looks better.

Ive been thinking about doing something different with the taillights on my wagon. Im not sure what.
I do like the stock ones.

You might check into focus wagon tails. there Vertical like the pinto except they wrap around the the 1/4 panel a little. It would be night mare to get them in right but i think they would look good. Also would be a lot brighter than stock.

i was lookin around today and noticed two sets of taillights, 79-90 caprice taillights are flat, and about the same size as the rear panel of the coupe/hatchback.

90-99? escort wagon taillights ave the same profile and height as a wagon

just a couple of ideas  8)

I like the idea of using the Escort wagon taillights.
Heres a comparison. My 79 wagon on the left and an 96 Escort on the right.

Looks like it could be done with some work. Ill have to go check em out in person. Might do some measuring.  :)

I thought they looked awful close, but side by side they're even closer. if they're the same height ... and it sure looks that way... all you'll need  to do is make a small filler panel on the outside to match the contour.   the look is almost stock to boot!!

Hello everyone.  Newbie here.  What I did on my '80 sedan, about ten years ago, was install some taillights from a '65 T-bird.  They are the exact same taillights that are found on the '68-'70 Shelby Mustangs.  I wired them up so the turn signals flash sequentially, just like the old T-birds.
They are getting hard to find in the junkyards, but they can be had at some businesses that cater to T-birds or Shelby Mustangs.

That must lookwild straw boss. Can you post any pics of your Pinto?

I just bought the tail lights off a 92 Escort wagon. Im waiting for them to come in the mail.   ;D
I didnt do any measuring. So, seeing if they fit is going to be a surprise.
Ehh....they were cheap enough.  ;)

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera yet.  Maybe for Christmas?
Perhaps I can borrow one from someone I work with and then figure out how to post them.  I still have a lot to learn with these home computers.

Hey, i found these 59 impala tail lights on e-bay.  I think they would look pretty cool on a hatch back, sideways, fat side facing the outside.  or on a wagon they would look cool, with the fat side down.  that's just my opinion.

How about 1967/68 Mercury Cougar sequential tail lights--those would really look cool.

If you've got the money, you could always get a set of 77-79 brazillian maverick tail-lights.  They look pretty good and have 3 bulb sockets (1 reverse, 2 brake).  Kinda pricey though...

On my first Pinto (which I'm still looking for rear pics of) I used teh tailights from a '70 Torino GT:

I trimmed the center down and they fit good. I also built a steel rear spoiler that mimicked the GT's tail.

On my next Pinto project, I'm using some other custom taillights thatI'm not sure if I want to mention (since they haven't been yet)... ;)
