Title: Pinto wants its engine back!
Post by: 2point3turbo on April 02, 2008, 01:47:53 AM
I think I cursed the engine that came out of the Pinto and put into the Capri. After many many hours of tuning and retuning I finally gave up on the engine. I have put new everything as far as the sensors go and a new harness just to be safe. I dont think the engine wanted to be removed. The timing could never get set right or something else was going on. I could get it to run good around the block but on the way back home it would just go to crap again. I finally decided to just put in a stock 2.3t and start from scratch.

Good thing I just bought an 83 Tbird for $200 running. Motor will go in tomorrow and I will post if the car is just cursed or I zoop at timing. Would a bad head cause this seemingly timing/detonating issue to happen? It doesnt smoke or show any signs but who knows right??? Sucks is that it would only happen at boost and I had to put the timing up around 25deg btdc with spout plugged in. I sure love to hate these engines.

After I got the engine out I decided to put the Garrett on the new engine since it had a AR on it stock and upped the injectors to brown tops. E3 had to go as well. When I took the goods off the old engine I noticed the #2 clylinder was filled with oil and gas. Must have missed the crack when porting. It was my first port job and I thought I looked it over well enough... guess not! That must have been the problem. Weird thing is that it never smoked. I have to take the head off to see what it was exactly but the new cam has to be swapped to the new engine anyway.

Bye the way, whats with the zoops?

More likely a crack or burned Piston???
Unless you are running a 2.3 then I don't have a clue...

I only own 2.3 turbo engines. I dont see the point in any other. The engine has 280k miles on it so I dont doubt it has a bad piston ring but not the piston. I maintain my engines pretty well and rarely abuse them... hey its a turbo, gotta have fun. I will get the head off this weekend to see whats up. I hopes its a head crack. I have a few laying around I can replace it with.

would you be interested in selling one of your turbos off your turbo 2.3s?

Just the opposite of what I do.

WTR-70: You are not thinking of putting one on a N/A engine are you??

Sorry but I am a horder of turbo stuff. It seems everytime I get rid of something I need it. I am putting together another Pinto this summer for drifting and will need the engine and turbo. They just brought drifting here and I would love to show those ricers a thing or two about American mini muscle. I will have no choice but to abuse that car

I took the head off tonight and there was no crack visable in neither the head or the pistons. I am not sure where the oil came from but it has to be in the head. I just dont understand how this engine could never be timed or tuned to run right without setting the timing at 20-25 btdc with the spout plugged in. I even tried to unplug the knock sensor once and it ran good for one trip around the block and then started to act the same after that. Any suggestions?

I have all new everything as far as sensors, harness, eec, timing was checked and rechecked a hundred times using the string teq. What els could be going on?
