Title: braking stalls out car
Post by: vegetableman on March 29, 2008, 11:34:50 AM
hey ive got a 79 and i just patched up a leaky gas tank and the car was running fine for a week. this morning it started stalling out everytime i braked and stopped the car. it feels like the car isnt getting enough gas or maybe its carburetor issues? any suggestions?

If you can throtle up at good speed then fuel filter is not cloged. 1st easy most common is engine normal op. temp. adjust idle mixture, small screw near base of carb. go for highest idle r.p.m. then back out 1/4 to 1/2 turn if you have good ears otherwise use tach.. Then go for point gap dwell prefer over feeler ga., gap plugs, plug wires to old and you know they are not wires, listen for snap sound around wires, open hood at night look for blue arc jumping, check dist. cap for cracks. And if that doesnt work then you have serious crap going on, such as low comp.. Any way check that 1st. then get back with me and I will tell you how to pump air down cylinders. From the aircraft guy. Have fun       ???

I thought a 79 didn't use a points distributor, though. A regular tune up or a distributor rebuilt might be in order. Or try Pintony's centrifugal flyweight fix. It's somewhere on here.

Youre right I forgot they dont use points, all my engines thru the 90s have point dist. so you can see why I whent their.  :)

I bet its a car with power brakes.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak.

i would 2nd a vacuum leak. most 2.3 leak at where the auto kick down hooks up. on the back of the intake manifold there is a vacuum tree that has rubber plugs on it they go bad

Could be a low float bowl level too!

Possible vaccum leak, small leak will give you hi idle speed. So like the other guy said look for cracked rubber caps and hoses. Fastest way to find leaks have eng. running take wd-40 spray all intake conections, dont forget brake boost if you have and also intake man. to head, when eng. r.p.m. changes thiers youre leak. :)

I would use somemthing NON-FLAMMABLE. Some of that non-flammabe 'low VOC' brake clean that won't clean anything is what I use.
