Title: 79 Gas tank...where to buy? -OR- best way to repair?
Post by: Starliner on March 29, 2008, 03:43:25 AM
Wifey's 79 has a gas leak along the straps on the bottom..  Yeah, rust through!   :look:

Upon further inspection I found the bottom of the tank has been fixed multiple times with "gas tank repair" sealing kits.
The holes will keep appearing if I follow the same path.  Also I need to change the fuel filter too often.

I can't find a new gas tank, is there a source?

If I can't find one, what method worked best fo you to repair your existing tank.   (and get the rust out & seal it)

I have the same problem with my tank. I asked around several different junk yards for another one but of course there weren't any. When I asked some welding shops to make me one they said it could cost somewhere around $600-$700. So my solution was to buy a 14 gauge 4'x8' steel sheet from NAPA which cost about $75 and have a friend help me with bending and welding it. It should work even better considering the metal is significantly stronger than stock.

Hello Fred,

I sent you an email.   Is $125.00 enough to cover your time & shipping.
Let me know.   I will have wifey send a check.
This will help me a lot.   Wifey feels grounded without her Pinto.

About the weather...  I am in Xiamen, China right now on business.  The weather is in the70s
Wifey in Michigan says it's raining and 40s-50s today.   Then it will turn cooler again.
