Title: 74 turbo pinto
Post by: turbo74pinto on March 18, 2008, 07:08:50 PM
well, here it is.  it a 74 runabout that was set up for road racing when i got it.  ive changed springs and put it on somewhat of a diet.  my regular street rims are stock 13s painted body color with the dog dish hubcaps.  the motor and tranny are out of an 88 turbo coupe.  its a stock, but ported, head on a studded short block.  the short block is just a basic rebuild....for now.  the cam is an esslinger 2277 hydrolic roller.  the intake is a knife edged and ported lower with a gutted, rotated and shortend upper.  im in the process of making my own log style header that will feed a hy35 turbo exhausting into a 3.5 inch exhaust that will dump in front of the rear axle.  intercooler is a front mount spearco.  i am converting to a blow through mass air flow.  twisted innovations will be doing all the computer tuning and dyno work.  these pics are pretty much the stage its in right now.  i will post more as i go.

the hood is old, i just fixed some of the flaws and put it in black sealer.  i was told it came from a company in ca somewhere but i dont know the name.  i was going to post a question about that to see if anyone knew where to find that hood.

Nice project.  The hood likes the one advertised by Unlimited Performance Products, part number P102.

thanks!  i really like the hood on the car.  i was concidering making molds of it to pop my own glass hoods.  but for 270, im saving my time.  ive delt with quite a few glass hoods, mainly fox body, and ive never seen one fit as good as this.

Looks really good!!!!Just finished mine, except for the hood.  Almost bought a hood like yours but they quoted me a six to eight week lead time.  So I am having a body guy modify mine , but he is taking just about as long, can't win :'(

To the point though, your car looks like it will be realy nice.

thanks again.  i wont be touching the body until next winter.  it will be stripped back to bare metal and started from scratch.  ive done body work on the side since i was about 12 with my dad (15years ago) but i dont really like doing it too much anymore.  i end up drinking too much between coats of base and clear :drunk:.  i cant stand the wait, or the wet sanding.  a good friend of mine went to school for it and is pretty good.  he needs an engine rebuilt and installed in his restored 74 vw camper bus.  we are swapping work....kinda.  i still have to help him with the body work. ive included some more pics from when i got it.

Ok I gotta know, is that a crackless dash pad or a plastic dash cap?

good lookin' car. love the wheels (American Racing Libre's) take care of the wheels.  they're hard to find these days.

the dash is almost crackless.  the crack is only about half an inch long or so above the guages.  i think its an original.  its still somewhat soft.
i was actually pondering selling the road racing stuff, rims and tires included (new mickey thompson sportsman i).  but i loved the way the car looked with that set up.  i may hold on to them for the next pinto.  id like to try out road racing.  maybe some scca stuff.  those rims are actually damn near flawless, and all the center caps are still there.

here are some more of the car plus a video!!  this is how it will look until its back from a dyno.  then it comes back apart for winter.  i plan on painting the engine bay and hiding as many wires as i can under there.

well everyone, ive been back at it.  the car is apart...again.  i dont have pics but ill take some today when im at the shop.  the motor is on its way back out for new rings and bearings.  the rear diff is getting a minispool.  the spool is installed, but the pig is still on my office floor.  im going to hide as many wires as i can behind the inner fenders and firewall when the motor is out.  ive also recieved my dropped spindles in which one is installed.  im having brake line clearance issues with the upper balljoint nut though.  a heat sheild is being fabbed up for my header and the down pipe is being wrapped.  id also like to get the dash together again.  im also still trying to find some sort of shifter boot.  id like to find one of the lower boots for a mustang or t-bird.
pics to come!!

after a few hours working on it again, the motor is back between the rails.  tranny, rear diff, axles and drive shaft are also back in.  the upper intake is back on the engine too.  i wanted to run the wires behind the inner fenders but that didnt happen.  i ran them behind the firewall and brought them out with the factory harness below the speedo cable.  spring fever is hitting me too hard!  i still havent figured out what im going to do with the brake lines.  im leaning towards running a -3an hose and fittings. today i remade my guage cluster and mocked it in the dash.  i have to weld a few metal tabs on the dash to screw it to and paint a few scratched up areas.  then rewire the guages and install the cluster and the dash cap.
hopefully ill remember to bring the camera to the shop tomorrow and ill snap a few more pics.

i read my first post from when i started this thread, and realized ive made some changes.  i sold my essy 2277 when i got the money for the new valve springs.  im now running a bo-port 1.9 with his matched springs. all the tuning will be done by me....and very slowly.  i dont have the money to fork over to a shop.  although i would like to rent a dyno from someone and hopefully find someone either on here or turboford to help me.  at 125 per hour for a dyno, ill take all the help i can get!!
ill be leaving my house in about 45 min or so for the shop.  i have my camera by my boots so i wont forget.  more pics to come!!

oh, i now have the header, turbo and full exhaust back on.  i have the ic mocked up where i want it to sit.  its only shimmed up with 2x4s so its crooked in the pic.  the brake line issue was solved by going to a -3 AN braded brake hose and addaptors.  it set me back about $55 which wasnt as bad as i thought.  next is mounting the ic and radiator.
