I'm currently looking at a 2.3L that's local. From looks from the outside it has all the signs of a good motor, other than that it's been sitting for a year and a half and I can't listen to it run prior to purchase. The orginal owner said it ran fine when pulled. I originally offered $350 (Probably should have offered less, but I was considering the fact that I would Not have to pay $100 in gas to pick it up) for the motor and transmission, and the seller said he'd go $400 even though he thought it was worth at least $500. So, I offered $375 over email, which I think must have sounded like a rude offer. :-\
I was just wondering what you all here would think this engine and tranny would be worth. Now I know I've seen full running Pinto's for sale although rough looking for $500. The prospective engine has I believe he said something around 80-90,000 miles on it and has been sitting for a year and half. I'd like to do some work on it for circle track so every dollar saved helps pay for otherthings. Thanks ;D
P.S. For the record I'll be at the swap meet in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday April 5th so if anyone has a running 2.3L with a tranny they would like to get rid of, let me know!
The most I have ever got for a nice running Pinto 2.3L here in Oregon was $275. The engines are fairly complete. Usually nobody wanted the C3's that they were attached two so most have gone to the scrapper with the car. My last two were 4spd's though but I kept the transmissions for a buddy of mine who needed them for his cars. I would say $250-$500 is the range, depending on transmission, mileage, and the completeness of the package. Fuel prices these days also play a big factor as for price so the seller will have to take that into consideration. I know I would. Good luck
i paid 300 for a 2.3 turbo out of a xr7 6months later I bought a whole turbocoupe for 400. if your looking for a non turbo 2.3 you might try the local stock car racers..around my area a non turbo that runs is 150-200 add another 100 if you want the trans
The value of a used engine it not an easy thing to figure.
If the engine has no warranty, you can hear it run or test drive it, or you don't know the seller you are taking big chances; keep that in mind when you make an offer.
The age of these things is a good indication that even the sellers might not have any idea of the TRUE history of what they are selling. Your best bet is to find a running car (wrecked, rotted, or no paperwork), BUT that can be hard to do if you don't have a way to transport (why some engines cost more that full cars).
IMHO: BE CAREFUL on what you pay if you have no recourse if the thing is junk, or be willing to pull the head and pan before you buy, but even that is no guaranty.

Sounds a little high to me. I have a 2.3 and 4 speed trans I would sell for a lot less. From what I have seen on the board here and places like craigs list they do not go for that much. I have seen complete 2,3 turbo engines for $250. In fact there are a couple on craigs list now. In saying all that, like was mentioned before, you are never quite sure of what you are getting in a used engine, even if you hear it run. Just my 2 cents.
emailed you, cheap and fairly local to you.
Engine and trans with 80,000 miles on it. 250 max. Unless the guy says that it was rebuilt at some point that he could prove which would allow you to determine if you could let it go for awhile with your needs or if you need to rebuild it.
Under the circumstanses the fact that it is an economical engine is irrellevant.
I know you need and engine but the guy isn't sitting on gold.
In my oppinion...a fair price for what you explained would be 150-225.

I am going to have to agree. I bought a 85k mile 2.3 N/A with a T5 and COMPLETE harness (everything under the hood and everything under the dash), plus the pedals and steering column from an 87 Mustang for $200. She wanted $300 for the whole car, but I didn't have the room for another as this was before I got rid of the rusty Cobra II I had.
