Title: engine swap
Post by: losin sux on June 30, 2004, 09:33:35 AM
Curious about a swap from a 2.8 to a 2.3 (think turbo)and the wiring harness.  What might NOT be on a 2.3 that would require me to bring the harness over with the engine?  Ideas, thoughts and comments please.

I'm not sure I understand your question but if your using an EFI Turbo 2.3, you'll need almost every part of that harness. I used an 88 Turbo Coupe donor car with every option. I'm conviced I think they ran even the radio antenna wire through that thing. I chucked the ECM plug in a vise and started undoing the outer cover until I had every wire seperated, then removed all the unnecesary junk until I ended up with a clean harness. There are books & internet info on wiring diagrams & pinout on the ECM that are very helpfull.

Looking at that again it is kind of murky huh?  If I initially purchase a car with a 2.8 but want to put a 2.3 stock in it will I have to bring the 2.3 wiring harness over from the donor car?  I will EVENTUALLY want to go with the EFI 2.3 Turbo out of a SC or Merkur etc.  This would be done in stages if you get my drift.  That make better sense?

Well I would say if this was a Chevy truck, you just unbolt the harness from the outside and transfer the new one. Since this is a Pinto and removing the harness is a pain in the @$$,  I would say use the old one and make little modifications as necesary.

I think if you're just putting in a stock 2.3, nothing really changes except for maybe the ignition box. The sending unit wires and alternator would be the same I would think. You can install the 2.3 turbo wiring when you put that motor in.
