hi im looking at buying a pinto and the person say it seams to run out of gear. the car was a 4 speed and now its a auto. so what could the gears is the rear be from the factory. he says as far as he knows they havent been changed.
Hello Skippy,
The 1971-72 Pinto axle codes are on the drivers door jamb near the striker post.
The codes are as follows.
G= 3.55 "Most common in 4speed cars."
7= 3.18 "Most common in automatic cars."
H=3.82 Only found in the 1.6L cars
Also 1.6L Pintos were never offered with the Auto transmission.

Hey Tony, there was a 3:73 available too but I'm not too sure of the year. Do you know? I thought it was the ratio that was available in the 1600

Hello Srt,
To get a 3.82 ratio you would have to have a ring-gear with 42 teeth W/ 11 pinion To get the 3.73 you need a 41 ring and a 11 pinion. so they are really close.
You are most likely correct depending on your source of information.

that was 30 + years ago. you're right though, real close and probably would never feel the difference. my girlfriend at the time had a '73 with the automatic & 3:18 that i swapped with a 3:40. now that made a heck of a good driver
