Title: Stock tire size
Post by: dave1987 on March 02, 2008, 02:53:45 AM
What is the stock tire size for a 1978 Sedan?

I am going to be taking my studded snow tires off the car soon but the front regular tires need to be replace. I believe I had 155's on it all of last year, although they may have been 165s. The snow tires are 185s and rub against the inside of the front wheel wells when turning the wheel until it stops.

Unless the car has had the passenger side door jamb repainted, there should be a sticker in there to tell you that information. If it's gone please let me know and I will get you the info off of mine.

In modern day size 175-75-13 is the best choice
175-70-13 is good too.

I have four 185/70R13 on my wagon.

This is the bigest Firestone's I could find for a 13" wheel.

I find the 185 too squirly at freeway speed. Too much sidewall deflection.

175R/13 is the corect tire size for the Pinto. I, however have decided to go a couple sizes larger ;D 205/40ZR17 in front and 255/40ZR17 out back.   :hypno:

Alrighty. So my snow tires were 185/80's and I put my regular tires back on until I can get new ones (no more studs) which are 185/70's.

How much of a difference will I notice going from 185/70 to 175/75 as far as handling goes? The 185/80s made the car feel like it had power steering, however that could be because they were studded. The 185/70s let me feel the car grabbing the road on turns and it doesn't roll nearly as much. They almost look like they are low on air pressure at 35psi.
