Title: Flexplate woes
Post by: crazyhorse on February 20, 2008, 04:16:29 PM
Ok for the 2nd time in 25k mi my flexplate is borken.
Specs:
2300 motor
'83 C4 trans
"w" axle code (I think)

What the....?!?!? Why is my flexplate breaking so often? I bought it at Advance Auto. It scared the crap outta me, I thought a rod was knocking!

What bell are you using?

I ask this because I have read where people modify 2.0 C4 bells 'by hand' and the allinement could be off.

Was your starter making any funny noises before the failure (misaligned)? Were the crank bolts torqued to spec? Over torquing can cause catastrophic failure. Did you change your torque converter before the previous breakage? Just a thought. ???

that sucks

my old 75 would throw a starter every 2-3 months. mostly due to cheap exside starters and pizza delivery. but hey! i got to where i could change them in 10 minuets!

Here goes.

I'm using an '83 T-bird Turbo bell (actually Cougar XR-7, but SSDD) I'm unsure of which bellhousing, as it was in the car when I bought it.

It's breaking 1/4 of the way out to the TC holes.

I dunno about the torque I didn't install it, a trusted mechanic did.

Yes the starter has been giving trouble since the last flexplate install, I chalked it up to cheep Advance Auto parts.I've replaced it twice. (dead bendix both times) When the starter acts up, it will "kickback"

As far as I know the TC is the one that came with the transmission.

Thanks y'all.

I miss drivin my Darlin' on a daily basis.

....I'm using an '83 T-bird Turbo bell....

IIRC: They never came with a C4, so that donor might have had the C4 swapped in. Are you SURE it's a C4? Can you read the part # on the bell?

I have seen the gear reduction starters and they seem to have the gear in a slightly different location.

No, I'm honestly not sure it's a C4. I was told it was when I bought the car. The bell is NOT separate from the trans, so I'm guessing that makes it a C3.

But the $64 question is what keeps breaking my flexplate?

Here are a few things that come to mind:

Incorrect flexplate for the application?
Incorrect torque converter?
Torque converter not fully installed into the tranny?
The 'doubler plate' in the wrong location?
Incorrect starter gear?
Incorrect starter?
Incorrect starter alignment?
Incorrect tranny alignment?
Cheap and/or poorly made flexplate?
Too many 'Neutral drops'?
Tranny not siting flush on the block?
Torque converter nuts working loose?
Bad/out of balance torque converter?
Gremlins?
Missing the plate between the tranny and the engine?

C3 or an A4LD maybe?
