Title: Turbo exhaust advice question
Post by: rkk on February 17, 2008, 04:17:24 PM
I just hooked up my exhaust on my Turbo Pinto.  The down pipe for the exhaust is 2.5 inches.  I connected it into the 2 inch exhaust system starting at about 24 inches down from the exhaust manifold.  Now when I let off the gas it sounds like a exhaust leak, but there is none.

My question what did I do wrong?  Is there to much back pressure in the system.

When I was running it with just the 2.5 in. down pipe, no exhaust system, it did not do this. ???

Thanks for any advice.

3" is good 3 1/2" is better from the Turbine housing back to the bumper.
I have 3" all the way on my 73 Pinto with a single chamber flow master..

So do you have the gasket from the manifold or the donut from the down pipe to the rest of the exhaust. BTW 2.5 to 3 out the back is the way to go.....Try Stinger his on Turboford.org...

Think I found the problem after a lot of frustration. Took the turbo off and found black steaks exiting out the flange on the ehaust outlet.  I am going to try to seal by lapping or some sort of metal gasket. (it did not have a gasket)
Also the waste gate was not closing all the way.  I bent the bracket so it seats better.  Hope this works.  Will not know until I get it back together and running.   :'(
I am crossing my fingers that this was the problem.

Why do you think the W/G was not closing?

When it was closed it was not all the way seated. You could move the disk that closes off the exhaust port up and down with your fingers because of slack in the bracket that holds it down on the seat.
When I bent back the outside bracket that holds the vacumm digaphram it seated with no slack in the seat, because it pulled the whole assembly back.  There was no play at all in the disk that closes off the exhaust port at that point. I think at one time ot another, maybe during engine install it might of gotten bent.
But in saying that, I am no expert on these things, I am not sure how tight it has to be on the exhaust port seat.
I have been going through every piece trying to find the reason for the noise.

If nothing else I was able to take a good look at the turbo.  I measured the side to side movement on the impeller assembly which was about .006 and found no signs of oil leakage etc.  So I am pretty confident it is good.  Probably should of made these checks before the orginall install, but I just assumed it was good.

I am using a 3" pipe from the cat back, with no muffler. It sounds great not to loud on the road, and adds power to the engine.

Just wanted to post in case anyone runs into this.  My leak is fixed!!!  It was either the wastegate or the flange.  Most likely the flange leaking.  Which was wierd because I could not feel or see the leak until I took it apart.  Thanks for everyones advice.  It helped!!  Next step is 3 in exhaust :fastcar:
