Hi again:
A few days back I mentioned I had found a manufacturer for Pinto reproduction parts, but said "metal" only. OK, let's bust this open even further, and say "repro parts in general"...not just metal.
The question is this - if YOU could have a "wish list" of up to ten possible Pinto reproduction parts, what would they be, first to last? Floor pans? Panels? Hoods? Custom parts? Door rubber? Interior parts? Trim pieces? Bumpers?
NAME them! I am trying to spearhead this effort, this is a REAL question, the Pinto folks need to step forward and get this stuff made. Details will follow as long as the inputs come forward. I have heard plenty of the arguments about pricing/demand, etc., and that's not my concern at this point. Speak up and be heard.
This is a golden opportunity. Other car collector groups have access to vast numbers of repro parts. As the Pinto fan base continues to increase (and it is), doesn't it make sense that we should also have access to parts to allow us to restore these fine cars? Waiting on your lists.......please......
Chris
PS - My list?
1) Floor pans
2) Dash pads
3) Quarter patch panels
4) Grilles
5) Door sills
6) Interior mouldings (these seem to always be beat)
7) Chromed plastics
..etc......

Chris
PS - My list?
1) Floor pans = My vote
2) Dash pads =already done Just dashes EXPENSIVE
3) Quarter patch panels =already done. EXPENSIVE
4) Grilles = Which year do you make first there are 5 different ones not counting Bobcat...???
5) Door sills. =This would be nice... Who makes them for other companys???
6) Interior mouldings (these seem to always be beat) =What year???
7) Chromed plastics = Re-chrome would be cheaper than NEW
Upper window felts
Rear window gasket for trunk models
**UPDATED** 2/5/2008 Do realize of course that just because I am willing to pay these prices, this does not mean I could pay these prices at this moment, and these are for BRAND NEW parts, not refurbished or rebuilt. **BTW, I have been looking into mold making, specifically with urethane and epoxy plastics.**
I will give a list of parts that typically A) Are damaged on EVERY car, and B) Are hard to find replacements for unless one is right in lady luck's pocket, or has deep pockets for the occasional evilBay score.
1. Door sills **50-100 a pair** (the aluminum trim piece that covers the edge of the carpet--This is usually worn due to the door hinge pins drooping & the heavy Pinto doors rubbing there upon closing the door.)
2. Battery trays. **50-100** (Need I say more?)
3. Gauge Cluster housing **40-80** (the white plastic piece that actually supports the gauges. They get old and crumble to nothingness. And YES I do know that there are at least four different styles)
4. The little plastic piece that goes on the hinges for the popout windows on a wagon. **Dennis Carpenter may be making these** (The wagon guys know exactly what I mean)
5. Emergency Brake handle cover/gasket. **40-80** (This would be two parts, the rubber gasket and the plastic cover as well.)
6. Sway bar end links **THANK YOU EVERYBODY THAT SENT ME THE LINK FOR THIS** (or at least the lower bushing...and if anyone knows where to find these, PLEASE let us know)
7. 2.3 oil pan. **60-120** (how many times have I tried to find one that didn't have a dent in it from running into a curb.)
8. Gas tank sending unit **60-120** (although from what I understand, you can use one from an early Mustang for the early cars, and one from a Fox Mustang for the later cars...but don't quote me on that)
9. Center caps **60-120** (both for the aluminum wheels, and the styled steel wheels.)
The following are just things that would be nice to see, even though I believe they will most likely not be reproduced.
10. Battery hold down **25-50** (not just a generic 'one size-fits all' please)
11. Wide wheelwell trim. **200-400 complete set** (both round and square fender styles)
12. Lenses. **varies, depending on year, size and type** (all of them...front, rear, side, all years...yes it's a pipe dream, but hey...you asked.)
Notice, of course, that I did not say anything about rust panels. I DO think that rust panels, especially patch panels for the rockers, lower door skins, the lower rear quarters and the lower front fenders SHOULD be made for our cars. Floor pans would be nice, as I am sure there are guys with rusted floors that would like something better than an "eh, that's close enough" fix. Sure, they are not that hard to replace with some flat steel, or a panel out of another model (Mustang guys have it good!) but it is still going to look like it was replaced by something 'not quite right'. I am one of the very fortunate few with very little, if any, rust issues, but I also know that I am in the VERY small minority. I also want to keep as many of these little jewels on the road as we can.
--Doug
I agree with parts mentioned but as I statedin the other thread, we need toget the rt front inner panel under the battery box. The really seem to rust there. Alro the battery box itself. Nor rhar would be a good start.

4/5/6/7 needed for a 73 and 74
I myself am after Wagon weatherstripping. Gaskets for the popout windows. Gaskets for the fixed side windows and finally a rear hatch window gasket. My original ones have shrank thru the years and the pass side fixed leaks some when it rains. I am pretty good about making sure it gets cleaned up before it spreads. I have been fortunate enough to find all but one piece (the piece that leaks) but I am hesitant to use any of them for fear of them being the last ones on earth.
Doug, I think Dennis Carpenter is reproducing the clips for the wagon popout windows. What I need are ones for the HB / Sedan.
wow, I really hope that everyone gets in here and offers their input. I couldn't agree more that us Pinto guys are kinda "left hung out to dry" when it comes to restoration parts. Especially when you visit a sight claiming to have "hard to find" parts, and yes they are for older cars, but they are for all the older cars that everyone else supplies parts for. This kinda goes without being said, but yes, patch panels are definitely a must in my book. There are too many Pintos sitting around with weeds growing up around them, and though it is nice to score one of these at any given time, very few are "cancer" free, or even left with minor rust for that matter. lower door skins, quarters, fenders, and hoods, not to mention seals, would be a godsend to most of us trying to fix up our little ponies. And when it comes to what years, I would have to say the earlier end and the later end seem to be the most popular, but to say that leaves out the guys with other years and then they are still stuck in the same boat. It sure would be nice to see parts made for all years, but than again, not sure what the demand would be. Just my thoughts as I initially read this, so I guess in essence I am trying to say my vote is on door skins, quarters, hoods and fenders for 79-80's.
1. Floorpans
2. Cluster gauge bezels
3. Radio Bezels
4. Door panels
5. Steering Wheels
6. Dash Pads
7. Interior Panels of all Kinds
8. Exterior repair Panels of all Kinds
9. Steel fuel line of exact fit.
10. Battery Trays
11. Turn Signal and Brake Lenses
12. Turn Signal Cams
I would say the things I would like to see the most out of my list would be 1, 2, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Very hard things to find in good condition and for a reasonable price, even used. Regardless of year, every restoration would be easier if parts for our Ponies were more available.
Grilles
Wheel trim moulding(chrome)
Steering wheels
Chrome trim and emblems
Headliners that work. I have replaced mine, but they are hard to fit in. When I replaced the one in my AMX they make a nice ABS plastic one that pops in and you can line it with material if you would like. Makes the process a lot easier than the rod and material style.
This is the stuff I have had a hard time finding in good shape.
It would take me less time to list the parts that I don't think should be reproduced.
That being said, and at the risk of sounding like a pessimist, I think that everyone that posts what parts they would like made should also state what THEY would be willing to PAY for them. One example: By far, the cheapest prices for floor pans, and floor patch panels that I have ever seen are the ones for early Stangs: $30. to $90. (depending on Y/M and size of the panel). I am sure this is based on the number of parts sold, and I doubt that the same parts for a Pinto would ever meet that demand or be that low cost. More 'food for thought': It has been stated that a quarter skin for a H/B-Sedan can be purchased right now for about $185. each, but similar ones for an early Mustangs have a price range from $60. to $115. depending on the Y/M (BTW: MOST are well under $100.). Looking at this relationship, one might assume it might hold true for other parts as well.
IMHO: Just because a part is 'reproduced' does not mean that the 're-pop' will be any cheaper than an NOS one of the same; in some cases I would count on them being much higher priced.
Am I saying we (anyone) should not seek out suppiers and manufacturers? NO, NOT AT ALL! I just hope that everyone has a reasonable expectation of what this items MIGHT cost.
Bill
I agree Bill, I have retored many cars and if you are going to play you got to pay as they say.
But right now we are limited to salvage yard parts and by the time you pull something out of there and have it reconditioned it cost you more than a repro part. Unless you just take the chance and use it as is, which in my opinion is always a little risky or doesn't look right.
But you are right it all boils down to supply and demand. If there is no demand they will be expensive or no one will take the risk in reproducing these.
But I applaud the people who want to make it happen. If we want to compete with the Mustang Camaro crowd it would be nice to see if this is viable. My 2 cents for what it's worth.

...But right now we are limited to salvage yard parts and by the time you pull something out of there and have it reconditioned it cost you more than a repro part....
I would not state that as a 'absolute', but do I agree that we have some limitations at the current time.
Bill
here's mine...
floor pans
body repair panels (quarter, fender, door)
battery trays and repair patch for under the battery tray
gaskets for wagons and all the different hatches
as someone who doesn't do his own body work and has to pay to have it done.... replacements at almost any cost are better than paying the body man to fabricate on the spot... I know because I have been there. The body guy and I spent lots of time talking about this particular problem as I was restoring my 73. One of the reasons I "paid thru the nose" for replacement quarters and spent way to much time locating them...
I also think these are the parts we have the best chance of having duplicated and will sell...
interior stuff would be just to expensive to duplicate, to many options/colors and the cost involved in setting up the machines to make the parts... well... just not realistic IMHO.
Bill:
You are sounding like a pessimist ;D, but I think the effort, in the end, will be well worth it...we all stand to gain something from it! The BIGGEST limitation is sheer numbers (i.e., how many people want a part). Knowing full well that this forum does not represent the "whole" of folks interested in Pintos (no forum on any topic does), it still makes sense to roll this out to the folks here FIRST. Then it can go through other channels/networks (EBAY, car shows, etc.) as interest grows.
The time to get this stuff done is now.
As I see it right now, the "hot topics" are as follows:
1) Floor pans
2) Battery trays
3) Patch panels
4) Steering wheels
5) Door sills
6) Dash pads
7) Grilles
Please folks, step up and be heard, the more the merrier. Another few days, and I'm gonna start moving on one of these items.
Chris
Hi Folks:

Hi Bill:
I'm not here to raise any contention; I will leave it at that. I am trying to drive an effort, only time will tell if I am successful. Your opinions are worthwhile, as are everyone else's, and you have not been "accused" of anything. Please don't be defensive. I will not comment any further on your posts, so that there will be no chance of creating unwanted controversy.
Keep those ideas coming, folks, and thanks for your participation.

Please continue to reply to me, I can take it.......
I ONLY brought up what I have because of what I have SEEN others deal with and what
I have gone trough.
Agree or not, most people will decide to buy an item based on it's price (it's relative value). If this fact is left out of this, there might be issues with the manufacturing of other parts down the road.
Connie and I searched for a LONG time to find the NOS/OEM cloth for her car. When we found it we bought all we could get. This did three things: One, it gave us the security that we would have what we needed. Two: We got a much better price per yard. + Three: It would allow us to make it easy for someone else looking to find it, and we could sell it for what we paid per yard to give them a good deal. Despite MANY DESPEATE emails and PMs from people BEGGING for this cloth, they all have disappeared when we told them the price was the price, or they made offers of pennies on the dollar. I don't take that kind of stuff personally, and I don't care if I ever sell one thread, but I will not give it away just the same. We even looked into having some made before we found what we did, and let me tell you, if people don't like what we are asking........ WOW.
I agree that interior items like this would have a very narrow market, and we understood that going in; again, we are not concerned with selling it.
The one thing that I was working on reproducing was a battery tray. I had the idea after I bought a 77 with a Custom S/S battery tray. I contacted 2 friends that have metal fabrication businesses and started putting some numbers together. The tray I had in mind would not have been an OEM 'twin' (once installed you really can't see much of it), but would do the job with all the stock hold downs and mounts just like the one from that car. My next step was to market the S/S tray from the car, both here and on ebay. It took 4 times on ebay, starting at $24.99, and to re-list lower each time until it was bid on. It finally sold for $10.51. Needless to say, I can not even MAKE them for that, even for triple digit quantities. My next question is "Will an OEM 'clone' do better? Who knows, but that would cost 50 times more for all the tooling.
(I.E. If I do make them, will I sell 100 at $25. or just 10 if I bump the price to $35.?)
Like I said in the other thread, carefull attention needs to be done with any company willing to make parts; if they don't sell the parts in the quantities that are needed for a profit, most likely they won't do it again (for us).
IMHO: There are lots of parts out there that some folks here just don't know about (see the last few posts). Those items need to be addressed, and maybe put in the vendor section. IF a comany makes a part for another car but that same part fits a Pinto, then they might be able to do market reseach faster and easier to identify the demand.
Again, I commend you for your efforts. I am not saying these things to talk you out of doing anything, I just want to let you know that with this 'list', there might be many more issues involved than meets the eye .

Is this what you are looking for?
YES..EXACTLY!
Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
I know I posted before but I was thinking about it more. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but one way to increase volume is to partner with other groups. For instance the Mustang II and Maverick clubs, and maybe even the Falcon club, since some of these parts are common.
Another option is to see about hotrod type parts since there are numerous swaps going on (my car being one of them). Like V8 transpanlt kits and Turbo motor transplant kits. Things like shifters, motor and transmission mounts, C4 adapter bellhousing, wiring harnesses, could be common with other cars, just to name a few. Just an idea, but would like to hear your opinion.

The impetus to get this done was due to my visiting the Maverick forum at mmb.maverick.to, and finding out that alot of repo Maverick parts are being manufactured. Any Pinto parts made as a result of this "survey" would be manufactured in the same facility as the Maverick parts.
Chris
Hello Every one,, My Name is Joe,, I am working with many companies to bring Maverick and Comet parts to those who need them,,
One person Found us on the Maverick/Comet Site and expressed interest in new parts for his Club and Members,, We will do what ever we can to start getting hard to find parts into production and help out,, We will give the same 110% Towards helping all of you out as we are for the Maverick, Comunity.. Popbumper didn't ask for a part for him self,,, He asked for parts for every one in this Club,, So I hope to get to meet allot of you either on here or in person at some of the function,,
How can we help,,,, We need a list of the top 10 parts needed for your cars, Number 1 on that list to be the most needed, to number 10 as the least important,, Not saying its not a needed part but we would like to get out the most crucial parts first and then work our way down to finishing parts,, Frame parts are always high on most lists,, due to saving some cars with front end damage then becomes possible.
Thank You
Joe
Glad you made it Joe, let's make this happen. I'm gonna say (and others, please jump in) that we should probably start with battery trays, then floor pans, then patch panels. Anyone?
Chris
Floor pans and patch panels are the toughest for me. It seems any car that is out there has a need for them unless it was Ziebarted, moved to Arizona and parked indoors for thirty odd years. I don't know how to weld as of yet, but I will be learning so I can do the floors myself if I must. A schematic of a floor pan or dimensions would be helpful, but my cars are missing them so I'm unable to even approximate where they should be and thus, their size. If anyone has any info, I'd love to have it.

My #1 part request would be hatch weatherstripping for the hatchback not the trunk model.
I think you're probably talking about metal parts but I don't need any of those right now (crossing fingers).
I got a PM on here about an ebayer selling the truck weatherstripping but the ad clearly says "not for hatchback". I sent the seller a message a while back asking if they had hatchback weatherstripping but no response.
I found the 93 Fox chassis mustang door rubber will work on the hatch but it is about 6" too short.

Hello V8pinto_306_n2o,
The problem is that the early Pinto hatch gasket is different than the later gasket.
What year Pinto are you working on???
From Pintony
Would have to once again pop in and agree on the floor pans, patch panels, rear quarters, perhaps lower door skins. Would really like to see this go somewhere, and not just get lost, here seems to be a really good opportunity for us to get the stuff we've always wanted. Heck, if people have access to these parts, you might find more of them getting fixed than sent to the scrapper. Just a thought.
OK guys we need to get back on topic here in this thread. Please respond to the original post only.

Floor pans are a great idea
Aftermarket air conditioning would be great. Comp. evap, condens. hoses, etc and to fit to current dash set up would be awesome.
Aftermarket Gas tanks with bladder systems. I had to repair a leaking tank and it would have been nice to have one with new sending unit, etc. :2fast4u:
Aftermarket AC is a must for me, Interior Kick panels? repro seat fabrics maybe.
Even though I do not need them, early style bumpers are needed. From past post they seem they are needed.Good luck with the parts.
Wagon rear hatch locks.....You can not find them any more...It looks like a standard door lock with a stamped metal J shape...It is not like a trunk or hatch back model.....
Am i the only one who wants
1. Doors Doors Doors Doors
2. doors doors doors doors
3. anything but doors
4. hot pants kit also to include the 3 pc rear air deflector

Seat belt kit that FITS!! the Universal kits that ive seen ( and have ) dont fit well. The stock mounts on the catch part are waay too long.
Really thats all i can think of for now...
Lets hope that we can get something rolling....
I read many posts here and it seems that the best thing to do to start off is to have a link on this site of items that are already reproduced. If were all going to help each other out here then let's truly do so. For example, I know there are at least few guys already registered as members on this site that make the rounds and speak with many other Pinto enthusiasts. It would be a good idea if those individuals contacted the other knowledged Pintologists and created a list of parts already reproduced and where/who to buy them from. There should be a link on this site that you could click on and get a full list from A to Z of what it is, who has it, and where to get it. This way there is no confusion. My reason for saying all of this is while reading many of the threads from other members I noticed some were suggesting some items that are already available. I know most of us aren't rich still let's not suggest having items reproduced that already are just because you don't like the price of the item already available. Let's buy from the guys that went through the effort to properly remake these items.
I noticed allot of talk about replacing rusty panels etc. I guarantee you it will be cheaper to pull a clean panel off a junk yard car then it would be to have a new one made from scratch unless the panel were to be reproduced in "Mustang" or "Bug" numbers which realistically may not happen. It would be cool if it did though. If clean/rust free panels are a problem, cars do still surface at the wrecking yards out here on the West Coast from time to time. Maybe it would be nice if there was a link strictly for "items needed as well" so guys out here on the West Coast can help the guys out on the east coast in need of rust free panels, etc. So let's think about this a little more. Right now there is a message board to post parts needed/available, etc. and that's okay but I'm suggesting a link strictly devoted to parts already available and another for items wanted. This way you can just go down the list and find what you need(if it's available) and who's got it. Until then we wont know exactly what needs to be reproduced. In short we need a separate parts available link and a parts wanted link as well.
Take care all!!!
As for a list of suppliers we are working on this already...thanks for the suggestion....
FrankBoss
www.PintoWorks.com
No problem. If individuals don't know what's already out there they're just shooting in the dark at this point. Further more the last thing we need is 4 months down the road to find out that there are 6 guys making the same battery trays, panels, grilles, etc. This would be bad for the individuals who just put down the capital and went through the effort to make something happen only to find out now total there's a 1000 pieces of one item out there and it's going to take 15 years to unload them. Maybe there is a way for us to somehow correspond nationally to keep this from happening.
Other then roll pans, bumpers, and other body parts I would say motor mounts for a V8 because I cant find Mustang II V8 motor mounts any where and the ones that I do find are eather in realy poor condition or the "if the price is right" saying. Sory to say this but some body that is sitting on a rusted out pinto or mustang and is thinking that they are on a f%$#ing gold mine can KMA. :wow: Sorry but I will not pay over 100.00 for some GD motor mounts! :amazed: BTW I have found a few websites that offer OEM reproduction weatherstriping for the pinto/bobcat. PM me for the link. Also I would say the interior plastic body pannels. Make molds of them and make them out of 'glass. I am considering this because 28-37 year old plastic zoops monkey bells :hypno:. Well that is my 2 cents worth.
Quarter patch panels for a wagon would be nice..
The killer on most large items will be shipping cost..
I can buy repoped quarters for my wagon at a fair price but the shipping on them is as much as the part it self..
That stops me from buying them..
The smaller the part the more you`ll sell

Hello V8pinto_306_n2o,
The problem is that the early Pinto hatch gasket is different than the later gasket.
What year Pinto are you working on???

I agree that new reproduction parts are needed. How about new carburetors, not rebuilts, that work (or new parts that go in them for example the spring thing and a throttle solenoid)!
also, grill and weatherstripping is a must!!
Jennifer :fastcar:
if they looking to make the $$$ on investments 71-73 grills same with 74-76 but though r out there interior panels mostly the hatch and wagon rear sides
I have restored 7 pintos over the last 3 years. There are many parts that I have made or had made. There are also a great deal of parts availible that I have used and loved. The problem is, when I need something for a pinto, I go have it made. Then, when some one wants one, for example, battery trays, I say "Sure, that will be $50." Then they say, "Oh well, I dont know, Um, I'll think about it." Therefore, I no longer give a crap. I make them for my cars and if you want one, you tell me. I Just has a complete set of trans cooler lines made for my sisters 78 2.3/C3 pinto. They are made of Stainless line ordered from McMasterCarr ($25.00), copied by a place in Irwindale, CA, to match the originals EXACTLY for $100 PER line, THEN they went to a place to get the fittings installed for $20. The grand total was $245.00 for a perfect set of trans lines. Plus, it takes me 3 days and a great deal of gas to do this! Some one wanted a set and offered me $100 for them. You see the problem? I will not be insulted or haggled with. The price is the price and that's ALL! I have made the following so far:
1. 2.3/C3 Trans lines in Stainless = $350
2. Early model Bat. Tray with built in heat sheild = $50
3. Late model Bat Tray (narrow battery, great for V6) with built in heat sheild = $50
4. Early bat hold down = $45
5. Mid years bat hold down = $45
6. Narrow bat hold down = $45
7. Early grille (brackets for 74-76 optional) in alluminum (almost done) = $500
8. 71-6 air dam in fiberglas = $75
9. 71-3 valence (73 req. mod) = $125
10. Pangra grille supports = $25
11. Pangra battery tray upper support = $25
There is no barganing here. These prices are still not worth it to me BUT because I love pintos, thats what I offer them at. This is NOT my job, I am a Pharmaceutical Engineer. I do NOT need the money so I will NOT accept you low ball offer. I am sorry if I come across mean, but it really is insulting to get 20 orders for battery trays and then get people who say, "well, I'll think about it." Photos will be posted when I get to it, and trust me, that might be a while. I will have these parts at Fabulous Fords for 2008.
I also have several places that I used fo parts. I have a dozen dealer accounts at different locations. If any one has a question, call me after 8:pm pacific or email me at pintopower@hotmail.com

Again, I am sorry if I sound like a jerk, but when I spend a lot of money for people that say they want things and then back out after I have made them, its irritating.
nice work :readi know that took some time. to put that list together
and i'm sure every one feel the same when i say thanx for the time invested.
I'd like to see a taller rear spoiler modeled after 70's Funny Car style. saw the same style on a 69' camaro and it looks awesome. http://public.fotki.com/Fastplasticbldr/1_to_1_dragperforma/all_ford_relatedper/alley056.html
So what are the latest updates if any on this?? I sure hope that there was not a lack of interest and this idea got squashed.......
Hello,
I just got a price on re-chroming my 76 's bumpers so I am looking to see if there are any out there. Repro's would be a nice option to have.
exterior mirrors?

Hello ip_phreak,
Where are you located?
I'm searching for a 1/2 hatch that I lost track of.
I'm not looking to buy it, I just would like to know if someone owns it and is going to fix it up...
What color is your 71?
From Pintony
Its red..there is a video of it in the "garage" section of this web site!
I live in Gordon, GA btw.
1. Engine compartment cowl seal.
2. Hood bumpers.
3. Windshield gasket and trim clips.
4. Door hinge bushing kit.
5. Runabout rear hatch hinges, or repair kit.
6. Front seat back knobs.
7. Door panels.
8. Arm rests and trim.
9. Rear hatch gasket and trim clips.
and too much to hope for --- Rear interior replacement panels. ;D
I just had a set of lowering blocks made. They are $100 for the set. They are aluminum. I designed them from a vintage set that were loaned to me (thanks to Barth Hamilton). I picked them up today and they will be installed this weekend. They are 1" blocks.
How close to original do you all want/need the battery tray?
I have an original '78 tray from my CW I can use as a template to start out. I'd need the other patterns made and/or photos and measurements taken so I could get them constructed, too.
I have a metal brake and if the demand is there, I can pick up the beading tool to put the patterns in the metal (it's ~$150).
Also, if I got the bead tool, I could also do the floor pans, easily enough... (I think there is enough of the passenger side to do a pattern, at least.)
That size piece of steel wouldn't be costly at all. The time spent working on it would... I'd have to figure out how much time it would take to make one, but I suspect a close repo piece could be made for ~$40-50, primed.
But to answer the OP:
I am looking for:
Door sills and late model headlight buckets
I've looked at my battery tray... there isn't any way *I* can make a repo peice without a press, but I do know a local guy that has a press... If I make a die, he'd run a batch in the off hours for me. Once I get back to Ohio, I'm going to take my battery tray over and have him check it out.
Basic wear items .....
weather stripping for (all models)
door window felts
carpeting for rear of runabouts and wagons
door panles (all models)
rear side panles (all models)
seat covers
dash pads
shifter and e- brake boots
Thanks for all the feedback guys, I am going to look into a number of these items and do research into getting them done. My main drives right this minute are:
1) Floor pans
2) Instrument cluster crumbling white piece
I will keep everyone informed on progress, thanks!
Chris
how about the electric assist element for the hot water choke? on the 5200
I am looking high and low for a new grill for my '72 wagon, hard to come by, it would be great if there was a way to get a new one.
For a like new early grill I get $150.00 for a repaired 1 $50.00 Fred :)
What is the difference between "like new" and "repaired"? Both sound like they would look like new, just not new.
The repaired would need more work like sanding, painting and the turn signal lens are milky white from sun fade. Like new have never had cracks, does not need paint and you can see light bulbs through lens. Fred :)
Top of my wish list is the rubber seal from the gas tank to the filler neck. I am fortunate to live in New Mexico where cars don't really rust, so my '78 has rust free floors and quarters. Fenders, doors and hoods are easy enough to come across.
Next on the wishlist is domelight lens, followed by seat covers and steering wheels. Looking for the original 3 spoke steering wheel that wont set me back $100.
Check "www.sscenterprises.com" and look under "Pinto parts" for the gas tank to filler neck seal. Best wishes from Texas!
Chris
Thanks for the info, will check it out
Well, as I told apintonut last week, I'm an old guy. I started restoring Mustangs when most people saw them as they see Pintos today. I did my first one in 75. There were no parts unless you got lucky and found them NOS. And that didn't mean going to your computer and accessing anything like e-bay or Craigs List. That meant phone calls and driving.
I started my own salvage yard so I would have the parts I needed, floors fenders doors. When I strip a car I cut it into little pieces and keep just about everything. That is what I am doing with Pintos now.
I remember when aftermarket parts first became available. First it was for 65-66. We thought the 71-73s would never be popular enough to see repro floors, fenders, cowls, etc. But it did happen, just had to wait long enough. Have you all heard of Dynacorn? They are making a Ford autorized 67 fastback unibody, complete ready to build for $15,000. That was in response to the Elenore craze and that we didn't want to see all the origional 67s made into them so they would be impossible for the rest of us to get.
Start now and it can happen. I think the best ones to approach are the companies that are making Ford authorized Mustang parts now. They have the in with the company and they understand Ford collectors.
My vote is for repro cowls, upper and lower
P.
It occurs to me that I should expand on why you need to go to companies that have a relationship with Ford.
In the early 80s there were some companies that were making some parts, mostly sheet metal as that was where most of the demand was. Prices were steep, $200 for half of a front floor. Later, some other people came in to the mix with much cheeper parts, and I don't mean just price. In the early 90s Ford started to see so much shoddy material out there, and got complaints from people as if it was their fault. They went on a campaign to shut down those suppliers. Now you can't sell anything that hasn't gone through Fords people to make them authentic and have the right to state that on the part. Otherwise Ford WILL sue your butt off.
Some of these aftermarket companies acually found Fords original tools and equipment and bought them. I wonder if there are any still in existance for Pinto parts?????
P
Your list pretty much covers most items. I just bought a '80 Cursing Wagon, and the interior is the worst part. Dashes and Bumper Guards would be the top of my list, along with seats, arm rests, and the very hard to find radio mount. Thanks for spearheading this and let me know if I can help in any way.
The white plastic parts. Such as the instrument panel backs, The gauge panel back, The side marker backs. Out of over Twenty pintos that I've had these have been the biggest problems.
I recall seeing on ebay, a little while back....
There is a plastic cover, that goes over outer metal elbow, that the front seats pivot upon.
You all know what I am talking about, that curved piece of metal that attaches the back of the seat to the bottom with two bolts securing it to the back, one bolt to the bottom.
I had never heard or seen one before i saw the ebay auction for it.
If we could get these reproduced (even in fiberglass by a member), I would surely purchase a couple pairs of them!!
with fear of being shot on this site... We need fenders down here in Tejas...
Where can I find some? any model will do...
I have a parts car that I will only be using suspension and body parts, all glass is good, bumpers are good... it is a later model, I have no clue what year.. and an ugly a$$ed green color...

"my other pinto is a Race Car"!!
What part of Texas? I am in Richardson, near Dallas - there is a guy up North of here (towards Wichita Falls) that has a 74 and 76 wagon (I pulled the 76 drivers fender off of that particular car), and a 79/80 sedan that is complete. If you need info, send me a PM, and I'll get you the guys' info.
Chris
I pulled the complete gauge cluster from a junk yard in Spokane while I was visiting. I didn't pay much ($13), but the white plastic is complete and still in great shape! If someone here does fiberglass molding and is positive that they can make a mold without destroying the original, I'd be willing to give it up. As of now I am just holding onto it as a spare, or a giveaway to someone who is really dedicated to restoring their Pinto. I don't want it to go to waste!
Dave:
I have been doing some molding here recently while laid off, working on my dash A/C console. The master (I had to make a completely new unit out of styrene) is being machined right now. Then, I need to pour an RTV mold and make copies from it.
The dash cluster IS next - yes, I have been saying that for MONTHS - my biggest (being honest here) caveat is that I have to lay down about $200 to get the materials, and spend several days working through the logistics. Since I AM laid off, I am reluctant to lay much money down on a CHANCE - mold making is somewhat tricky, if you don't get it right you lose what you put into it. It sucks to have plenty of time - bbut not a lot of $$. What little I have been making on the side has been going into my own restoration.
I have a good used unit from a '76 - which I plan to make others from. I hope I can get some results before too much more time goes by. Always busy, but not a lot of cash to throw around.
Chris
Here's my list:
pop-out window grommets that fit into the two slots in the pillar post;
early model "long" interior armrests in the appropriate colors (like saddle bronze);
vinyl for vinyl tops
the inserts for those wheel centers (mine's red color is faded and/or the clear plastic has cracks;
bonus fantasy piece: How about the kicking filly the size of the Mustang's usual grille emblem?
In fooling with the armrests in the Baby I noticed that while 1980 armrests are compatible with 1974 holes (bolt) they are different armrests.
Chris, the amount of time taken to reproduce parts is understandable. I find myself fabricating things from sheet metal and misc. parts all the time and it is a very time consuming process. Take your time and don't let anyone rush you, let's get the mold down correct the first time so no money is wasted in the effort!
I agree with blupinto on the vinyl tops and the wheel center cap inserts. I would purchase a couple sets of center cap inserts if they were available!
I'm not going to list 10 items, all y'all know we need sheet metal, but rubber parts would be great. Door seals, the underhood seal that attaches to the cowl, hatchback seal, and the one I need right now....the clutch cable boot. I have looked all over the place and can't find one anywhere. Thought I found one at a Ford dealer in Carrolton, Ky but he hadn't updated his inventory. If anyone out there has a good one let me know.
Thanks
John
John:
Gimme a part number for that clutch cable boot (or, alternatively, your car year/model) and I'll see what I can find for you.
Chris
Absolute #1 on my list - Preformed brake lines!! I need them and it seems impossible for even a "professional" to "make" a properly fitting replacement
#2 Window/Door Seals
#3 Instrument cluster bezels and brackets
#4 Fuel Tanks :D (Yeah right. Like anyones gonna make those! lol Cant find a new one, anywhere. You are royally screwed if you want or need a brand new one)
#5 Interior pieces. Panels, seat covers, headliners (can find sedan ones, i havnt found a wagon one yet), arm rests, stuff like that)
#6 Electrical switches. I dont know that you can find headlight switches and stuff like that still.
#7 Grilles - 76 ones are probably the hardest to find as they are a one year only item. Best looking one too in my opinion. Good luck finding one, and i need one.
#8 Repair panels. Quarters, floors, rockers, cowl panel.
#9 Original Wiring harnesses
#10 Not really sure what to put down for this last one...
1. Body panels, of course, especially lower panels to repair rust around the fenders/lower doors.
2. ALL the replaceable front end parts, to completely rebuild the front end. I have found some, but not all of them. Also need rear suspension bushings, and the insulator that goes between the rear leaf springs and axle.
3. Armrest/door pulls.
4. The center trim and horn switch for the steering wheel.
5. The part of the dash that the original radio goes in. Previous owner cut mine up.
6. Roof rack for the wagon. Mine is starting to rust out from the inside.
7. Window cranks that don't break. I've gone through 4 from Autozone, and they all broke within 2 weeks.
8. Plastic grilles. My '73 has one slat missing out of it.
9. Mine are ok, but tail light, side marker light, and front turn signal light lenses sound like a good idea.
That's about all I need to make my car near perfect. I've already installed a rebuilt 2.0 engine and a complete new clutch assembly in it, and engine parts, seat upholstery, and carpet still seem to be easy to find. Replacement glass if it is not available or hard to find. What I really need right now though is parts to rebuild the front end. Jerry.

You missed a NOS '76 grille on EBAY last week, went for $56. I thought that was pretty reasonable. Are you needing a gas tank? Sedan or wagon? I have a '76 wagon I am putting back together and have been looking for parts myself.
Chris
I am in need of a 78 gas tank and a 79 station wagon gas tank.
My vote would be for:
1. Weather stripping.
2. Sending unit (can't find this anywhere).
3. Rear Quarter window louvers.
4. Dash pad.
Hi:
Sending unit for which year gas tank? Sedan or wagon? Let me know, thanks!
Chris
I would like to find..rubber end pieces for bumpers, kick panels, consoles, grills, rear spoilers
I got in late on this so hopefully there is still some life in it.
I didn't read through all 8 pages of posts but did anyone mention the whole car.
With all the technology Ford has now couldn't they just re-produce the Pinto with all the safety features they ignored in the 70's ? Everyone is doing retro anyway, why not a 2010 Pinto ;-)
That'd be the one all-new car I'd purchase! Alas, I think the name "Pinto" is still linked with "fiery death" to some people and the name alone would make the car guilty-by-association. Stephen King didn't help matters at all with the book and movie Cujo. For that matter, I don't think those media did St. Bernards any favors either. >:(
While I'm at it, when the Escort ZX2 first came out in '97 I thought, " that's what the Pinto would look like if they reintroduced it". I would've loved the filly emblem emblazoned on the car...
Seems like everyone covered all the bases on parts. The one thing that I need is the rubber moulding that goes between the front bumper and the bottom part of the headlights/grille for a 1980 wagon. I guess I'm fortunate to have a car that in very good condition.
Intake manifolds for 2.3 engines with thicker water jacket walls that dont rot through as easily as the originals?

some one plz take a pick of a pinto wagon parked next to a early focus wagon
i parked my old 73 wagon next to a focus wagon when they first came out and was amazed how close the body lines where to each others
