Anyone know if anyone ever made 4.11 gears for the 6.75 Pinto rear end? If so, where could I get a set?
If your building something that needs to be geared that low, you need to upgrade to an 8", because your 6.75 will never handle it. You'll twist the splines right off the axles.
WV: I believe, if I'm suveying these posts correctly, that he's building a racer, but has to have a 6.75" rear end in the car because 8" weren't stock on cars with 2300s.
Of course, that isn't to take anything away from the truth of your post.
In Hot Rod Yearbook no.11 vintage 1971, there is a Pinto build up for a stock 71. It this artical they mention two things. First, apparently Ford at that time was going into production on a 3.82 gear. And #2, they could not get it in time to do the test SO, George Spears ( of Spearco) took a Econoline Van ring and pinion and turned it down to fit the case. The ratio was 4.0:1.
Interesting Huh...............
Yep, actually we have a racer. I have 3 different posts, trying some way to achieve the right ratio for running our local 1/5 mile racetrack. Right now we are running the 6.75 diff with 3.55:1 gears, and the german trans with 2.13 second gear which gives us 5500 RPM at the end of the straights. I'm pretty sure the fast guys have the same diff ratio and the german trans with the 2.57:1 second, which gives about 6500 RPM. The rules won't let us run an 8" (unless I can find Ford paperwork showing that an 8" came in 2300s) and 4.11:1 which would give the same result. So anyway, I'm trying to find either a low geared trans, 4.11 for 6.75 or Ford paperwork. I have been looking for that trans or an equivalent (there may be a 2.73 Mustang II trans) for a couple of months with no success. If a 4.11 exists for the 6.75, I'm not too worried about blowing it up, as this is a stock motor class.
OK, sorry I didn't see the posts about building a race car. In one of the Pinto forums there is a guy who either works or worked in one of the Pinto assembly plants. Sorry, I can't remember what he goes by. But, I seem to remember in one of his posts him mentioning that sometimes when they ran low on 6.75's on the line they would put in 8's. You may research the archives and find out who he is and contact him.
Bill in WV
In the 70's, ZOOM made both 4:11 and 4:30 gears for the 6 3/4" Pinto rear ends. I have had both in race cars, so I know first hand about them. When I talk'd to Zoom in the mid 80's, they told me they had none and were not going to tool up again ever. Pintos with 2.3L engines DID (THATS DID) come with 8" rear ends in 79/80 (74/78????) in the models made for hi-altitude (example-DENVER) use. I have seen the info sheet from FORD stating this fact. You can get your own copy thru the Detroit public libary (Ford MO/CO archives) Follow the threads for that and ANY thing Ford you want to know. Just make sure you have lots of time to look. Get a 8'er and put a 4:11 or 4:89 in it and forget it. It'll out last the car if you seal up the out side axle tube so the oil is where it's need'd, not out by the brake drumn. Only problem with 8"ers is weight over 6 3/4"ers.
