Hi all!
I haven't had much luck in my quest for an orange '74 Runabout so, taking the advice several of you offered, I decided to compromise a bit and purchase a '72 sedan instead ;D. Still have the black interior and the manual transmission I wanted. The car needs some minor bodywork and new paint anyway, so doing the color change isn't a big deal. Other than the front seats, the interior is in pretty good shape. Is there a source for OEM vinyl or should I just plan on redoing the back seat as well so everything will match up? I'm picking the car up Monday... I've had several conversations with the owner and he assures me it is mechanically sound. I can't wait to drive it... it's been nearly 30 years since I was last in a Pinto! I'll post more details once it is in my possession.
Have a great weekend!
Dwayne

Hey dga57,
Is the Pinto you bought the one Kevin has in Hagarstown Md.??
SMS has the original material. for thseats BUT is SPEND-Y.
+ you will need a shop to sew them up...
Be sure to take photos of your progress on the re-store of your Pony...
From Pintony
That's the one Pintony! Kevin tells me that the floor pans are solid and the car is mechanically sound. Am hoping to drive it home... it's only about 150 miles. All in all, I think I did okay at $1009, considering I can do most of the necessary cosmetic work myself. Already have a dash cap on the way and there's a little old lady about five miles from me who is an absolute wizard with auto upholstery. Cheap too... she did the bench seat in my F150 in factory correct cloth and vinyl for $169. Only thing is you have to pull the seats and take them to her. Not a problem really. I'm going to check with her about the vinyl before I buy it anywhere else but I'd like to keep it stock if possible, regardless of price. I'm not going to say money is no object (after all, it always is) but the cost of bringing this Pinto up to par should be a pittance compared to the classic Lincolns I'm used to dealing with.
Neil... I can't believe you had to ask! I'm painting it orange! If memory serves me correctly, the paint code is 5W... the color of my original '74. Won't get around to that until the weather warms up a bit. There's a little bodywork to be done first. The quarter panels have had some work that needs to be freshened and there's a dent in the hood. Looks like it can probably be repaired, but would be simpler to replace if I can locate one nearby. There's one on eBay for $35, but then the shipping to get it to Virginia is $125! That won't work! Might straighten this one and then just keep my eyes and ears open for a better one. It appears that Kevin parts out quite a few Pintos so he might just have something there... if so, I'll probably buy it and bring it on home with me Monday.
I'm really excited at the prospect of being in a Pinto again. I am, however, one of the most computer-inept people you've ever met. But... I have a digital camera and a computer-geek kid so, hopefully, we can document some of the work as it progresses. I'm going to thank everyone here in advance because I'm sure I'll be bending your ears with lots of questions once we get going!
Dwayne
