Title: vinyl dying
Post by: r4pinto on January 06, 2008, 06:26:33 PM
Hey guys, I got some plastic & vinyl parts that I need to change the color of. I was using the vinyl pain that they sell in the parts stores but of corse, it chips off even after I use the applicator spray first.

What is out there that won't chip off?

Good vinyl dye, when used properly, will not chip or flake off of VINYL and can be used on cloth/carpet; it won't work for plastic. I have tried every "plastic" paint I could find, IMHO none are worth anything. If you clean the parts, they will hold up to some degree, but I need to touch-up my parts time to time.

Hmmm.. thanks for the tip Bill. Where can I find good vinyl dye at? I got some door panels coming to me that I'm gonna have to dye.

for the plastic.   i was told, (i haven't tried) but paint them with spray glue and let dry primer then paint. i would try with a scrap pice first. was told the spray glue works like a primer so that u get a good bond. how ever im sure they will still be prone to scratches. but wont flake on there own.

The only thing I'd think would be bad about doing that is the glue might give it a rougher texture. I dunno.. might try it on the lower kick panels since I have them off & they're chipping.

Any ideas on a good brand vinyl dye for the door panels?

I get mine at Mustangs Unlimited along with the primer. It's only about 4 miles from my house so I don't have to pay shipping. I have seen it at NAPA. If you find any 'name brand' dye it should be fine.

I've been changing int color for over 30 years now and don't flake off. You have to use the right products not K-mart Krap! It's Not dye it's paint.
Go to your local auto body supplier , they can mix any color interior you need in gloss or semi gloss in the SEM line. http://www.sem.ws/news_article.php?article_id=24

This product is great I change vinyl seat color and it don't ware off ! And it works fine on plastic parts it's all about prep before painting. To clean plastic parts buy a gallon of the cheapest lacquer thinner you can find that's fast dry thinner and it won't attack the plastic parts, wash the parts down 3 times then use the SEM color within 15 min. The thinner softened the plastic just a little and the SEM bonds to the part it's forever..
I also Dye vinyl roofs without any problems...

Just use the right product for the application..

I have used SEM paints on vinyl and plastic parts and had excellent results.
It is not cheap and the minimum quantity is 1 Quart but is worth it for me.
And as map said preperation is critical for good results.

I agree with Bob and Map. That product is good.
I have to admit though I have never heard of the " spray glue" method. I personally would not try it but thats because I have had great success with other products such as SEM. Also there are two others to consider. 1) Dupli-Color High Performance Vinyl and Fabric Coating and 2) Colorbond Leather, Plastic, and Vinyl Refinisher. You can get both at Summit Racing.

well i was wanting to change collar from tan to black. this was told to me buy some one at a car show so take it for what its worth ( just a rumor of a way to prevent flaking paint ) on plastic. im going to try it but will also look into products mentioned here. as black hatch back panel's are harder to come buy.
