Trivia question for all us 'experts'....
Anyone?
It's not what I thought.....
People might want to find out before they buy one.

ADDED: I now sell stepped dowel pins to allow the 2.0 bell to bolt on a 2.3. PM me or see my thread in the parts for sale section.
I could be wrong but, It seems to me that they used the same c-4 bellhousing.
The c-3 and c-5 bells are different and won't work on a c-4.
I used to know all this stuff but, It's been a while.

The dowel pins for the 2.0's are about .5" where the 2.3 are about .6" in diameter. Other than that, EVERYTHING else is the same.

No-one??
OK, here is another one:
If you wanted to install a C4 behind a 2.3 and wanted to use a stock un-altered bell and dowels, what bell would you use?
1) a "D1MP-7976-AA"
2) a "D42P-7976-AA-2"

Sorry for the trick question, but the answer is NIETHER. Get out of the Cash Cab and start walking.
I do admire your bravery.
Now for the back story.
I scored a "D4" bell last year, put it on a shelf and thought no more of it now that I "had one." Earlier last year, Ultimate Pinto and I gutted a 73 Wagon; he took the engine, I took the tranny. A few days ago I decided to clean the bell from the 73 because I had a "D4" and I was going to sell this "D1". As I clean it I discover it is a "D4". Now I know for a fact this came off a 2.0, so I attempted to install it on one of my spare 2.3s only to find it won't fit due to the dowel size. Then I grabbed my other "D4", and sure enough, it won't fit either. I started looking into this to find there are at least 2, maybe more "D4" bells, of which at least one will not fit a 2.3. The D4s have prefixes of "D42P", "D4ZP", and MAYBE a "D42F" and a "D4ZZ" (I have not been able to verifiy these); the "D42P" WILL NOT FIT A 2.3. This is something to look for when buying a "D4" bell. The dowel holes for a 2.0 are .480", the ones for a 2.3 are .6". All these bell part numbers will have the same middle number of "7976" and should also have some variation of "A", "AA", or "AB", possibly followed by a dash and one or two more numbers (one of mine has a "-1" the other a "-2).
I hope this helps.

the car came with c3, but i used it for deliver pizza for 2 company at the same time so the car got well used and all my parts i got for free from a tow yard that a friend owned the same tow yard that soled me the car. a 75 with 30,000 original for 40$. any way i would put any tranny that i came across in. i was going from a a4ld back to a c4 from a 2.0 that had came from a 72 or 73 figure 8 car. all the tranny's i put in were used and most the time i didn't know any thing about them. even if they were worked at all i put 6-7 tranny in that car.

"...yes this is the highly sought after 74 model that came on the 2.0 and 2.3 that year...D42P 7976 AA1"
I sent him a 'question' and gave him the correct info....
Bill
This is what I sent:
"That ''D42P'' bell will not direct bolt to a 2.3, it was made to fit the 2.0 ONLY. The ''D4ZP'' is made for the 2.3. I hope this helps."
His reply:
"it will fit the 2.3 minus 2 bolts...thanks...i,ve did it before tommy"
It appears that he knows that his listing discription is wrong/misleading, but even his reply is questionable: All 6 bolts CAN be used, so maybe he 'not did it before'?
SCAMMER!!
Bill
Poor bidders. He'll get his eventually.
Good in fo on the bells though Bill. You da man. ;D
Sorry to resurrect such an old post but will the D42P bell fit as long as you have the step-down dowels?
