Title: Lifter tap ???
Post by: Kerry67 on January 04, 2008, 07:55:57 AM
Figured I would start a new post with this question.  My new 77 Wagon has a pretty good lifter tap goin on.  Has anyone used the Lucas Oil treatment ???  Does that help ???  I am going to change the oil tomorrow and throw some of that in.  Could'nt hurt........

is it a 2.3L or a V6?
Oil additives are not going to help at all really.
If its a V6 it might have dirt in a lifter, I have put a 1/4 a cup of ATF to clean them out run for a couple days then change the oil. But it was only a tempory
patch to the real problem.

It is a 2.3

I have used their tranny stuff with great success.

The 2.3 is very easy to work with, but they tend to eat cams and spit out followers. I would pull the valve cover and inspect the cam and see if there are any loose followers. If there are any with excessive play, it could indicate worn followers, worn cam, or bad hyd. adjusters (lifters).

if it is a lifter Tape on a 2.3L inline 4 you should have it looked at closely.
When the lifter collapses it can cause damage to the cam.
most of the lifters I have had that made noise have been Damaged and started to come apart. If they do come apart it is most likely to drop the Rocker/Cam Follower.
You should pull the valve cover and look at the Cam and locate which lifter that is making the noise and look closely at the cam lobes.
With the cover off  start the motor for a few seconds. you should get a good spray of oil from the cam if its oiling properly. Beware this can make a oily Mess spraying the ceiling even!

I would also look for dry black powder around the exhaust manifold this will show a exhaust leak, these can make a tapping sound as well.

Thanks for the advice.  I am no mechanic, I can do some maintenance work but when it comes to what you just described, not a chance.  Is it a pricey thing to have looked at and/or fixed ??  Can you just change the lifters if that is the problem ?  The car seems to run just fine otherwise except for the tap........

If you have a garage that you trust ask them how bad the noise is before you decide to do the work. Maybe there is someone on the board near you that can help.

If you have it worked on at a garage I recamend you have a few extra things done to save you time and money later on.

Have them swap the cam to a used roller one (from a junk yard) with the roller followers from an 88 to 93 2.3. Install all new hyd. adjusters, timing belt, and install new valve seals.

The used roller cams are normally $25. to $100. depending on the yard, but they are still cheaper than a new slider cam kit.

I prefer new adjusters myself. You need to find out what year they are from. The later year 2.3s have smaller valve stems and their followers will not work. You can ask the seller how wide the notches are in the followers.

I would still bank on it being a Exhaust leak most of the time I find a tick..

it only really taps when you are giving it gas.  Once you get up to speed it is ok.  However, when it taps, it really taps.

It's hard to figure out without acutally being there, but are you sure you are not hearing "pinging"?  Based on your last post that's what it 'sounds' like to me. If so, it can be caused by a few things including bad gas, incorrect ignition timing, and bad EGR valve.

Definatly not pinging from gas.  And it also does not sound like an exhaust leak.  I am betting lifters for sure.

I would put 92 octaine in it and back off the timing a little and see what it does. These are cheap and easy to do before you drop money on the problem.

Well, Lucas can help, BUT only as a band aid fix. If you do have lifter noise it will only get worse until the problem magnefies. As for what 77turbopinto said, I would try it. 92 octane is cheaper than a bottle of Lucas & if your timing is off you'll definitely have the noise.

Besides, what have you got to lose by trying those remedies? 92 is generally only $.20 more per gallon & adjusting the timing is free.

Very True.  I just filled up last night so my next tank I'll try it.  I am changing the oil tomorrow and will do the Lucas as well.  Certainly could not hurt the car.
