Title: Pinto Pinewood Derby
Post by: FCANON on December 28, 2007, 07:42:36 PM
Well its that time again when I have to help my boys make a Pinewood Derby.
My youngest just started in Boy Scouts so this is his first.. I've built almost 20 of these gravity cars most of them in the shape of vintage hot rods but this year is the first Pinto!
I will Document it well with Pic's and a few secrects.
First off it has to be the BSA Body base, wheels and axles.

So I started off with a outline of the wood block on a peice of paper...these let me figure out how and what to cut.
Since we are making a fendered vehicle we're adding wood to the car.

So me youngin wanted a sedan not the wagon.

I'll start taking pic's

I look forward to seeing the Pinewood Pinto. This is the first year in a long time that my boys won't be in the PWD. They only have Cub Scouts race around here, Boy Scouts can help out if they want service hours but they usually don't race. We have six Pinewood derby cars sitting in our house, they are a blast. The boys(dads) take this stuff serious.

well i tried to post pics but they wont go d a m it.  but i have 6 first place trophies and one third place. after the 3 year of first they asked me if i would run in the boy scout and adult class (they had the two class) i still won every year. well other than the third place year when one of the wheels on my car got bent when know one was looking! any way  i have a pinto pinewood from the last year i ran. but i just scaled it to fit on the block.
i also have one that a 57 chevy and a 67 corvette a 87 ford truck. and some just shapes

p.s. its all in the axle nails and wheels. the more time u spend on though the faster they go i would spend lots of hours sanding and polishing them and round the part of the nail that touches the wheel for less drag.   round off the part of the wheel that touches the body for less drag.  if the wheels arnt perfect get new ones. dry very fine graffite is still the best to use for wheel lube.

I turn the wheels and the axles on the Lathe. when doing this you must keep the wheels turning slow and keep them cool.
I find more often  the axles are bent or wonky.

I'm taking pics now of the first steps of the build.

Google Pinewood Derby and see what comes up. There is so much information that your head will spin. There are also places that sell trick parts if your troop or pack runs an outlaw class.
