Title: zoop/carb turbo engine swap
Post by: holden on December 17, 2007, 01:00:47 PM
Has anyone swapped a 79 mustang 2.3l turbo into a pinto? It looks like swapping a zoop turbo vs a fuel injection turbo easy since you would not have to wrong about the wiring.

Is there any pit falls to this type of engine swap into a 80 pinto wagon?

Any information would be great.

Thanks,
mark

the best psi u can get is about 8 lb.  unless some one has come up with a turbo up grade kit i haven't seen. im building one for my ranger with a propane carb. u may try one of these with it and a bigger carb.   a holley 350 would be cool.

I started to do this a few years back. The carburetor sits significantly higher than the stock pinto carb so you do have to cut a hole in the hood to make it fit. You also have to change oil pans, and pickup tubes ( do this when you change the pan because you have to drive the dipstick tube plug out from the bottom, which is inside the pan.) Have to have  a custom exhaust crossover pipe made too, and a downpipe from the turbo back to the other side of the car and into the stock exhaust, or else custom exhaust all the way back. They are rated for 140hp. Gives you 40-50 hp more than stock but thats about the most you can do. I think the biggest thing that holds you back is 1. You cant intercool this type of setup, and 2. the carburetor. Youd have to add more fuel volume and pressure as boost pressure rises beyond the stock amount. And then lower it again as the boost dropped  back to stock. Probably would need an MSD 6BTM ignition too, since you probably wont have all the engine controls that the engine had in the mustang for spark control and all that. The 79 2.3T engine also has stock 2.3 NA compression (9:1) but does come with forged pistons. I got mine installed and running and driving....but never got the turbo hooked up before i eventually sold the whole thing off, car and all. Might be good for a little extra go power for zooming around town with but for all its worth, might as well get a 2.3T efi. Another 50 hp, lots more potential, and better drivability. No hard starts, or long warmups, plus better fuel milage and throttle responce. I'll probably do this swap 3 or more times before im done (seeing as i have 3 pintos, and who knows i may end up with more!).

The turbo would not be where to do the upgrade. BTW: 8 PSI is too much without LOTS of WORK (unless you REALLY like building engines).

i would agree building the engine right from the get go is recommended if u up grade the turbo. stock they r 3-4 psi

Your quote, not mine:

I don't get it. First you said it would be 8psi unless upgrades are done, now you say 3-4 unless upgrades are done? What gives? I am just trying to figure this out; it reminds me of that 65/35 thing in the other thread.

Do you have any FIRST-HAND knowledge on this specific topic? IF not, please mention that fact (these are just your 'opinions' or details you have 'heard', and not based on YOUR experience) in your posts. It's great to try to help, but wrong/incomplete details COULD cause problems for others.

The stock pressure is actually 4 to 6 psi according to the book that i dont seem to have anymore. I do remember that, tho. I dont remember if you can adjust it beyond that or not.

i have the turbo set up on an engine an will post some pics asap. i did port and polish and use a better wheel off another turbo. that is supposed improve the psi. i have a book on this setup. and direction on how to set it up i will scan and post if any want.

the 8 psi is WITH upgrades

i only know here say on stock psi was told 3-4 w/o mods

this is going in my ranger soon as the stock engine lets go.
