Title: 5 speed for 72, 2000 cc
Post by: neal martin on December 11, 2007, 06:14:45 PM
I would like to put a 5 speed in my play car, stock 2000cc (right now ) and am wondering if there is a 5 speed that bolts up direct or what I will need to do to make it happen.
Can you guys help me out ? Has a 4 speed now and I am building another motor a littel more racey but the motor in the car is brand new and don't want to turn as many RPM'S on the interstate as I am now, it's all origanl and want to pull it out in one peice and save it for later.
Any advise will help, Florida dude looking for help.

Hello Neal,
Use the Merkur XR4TI T-9 transmission with your stock 2.0 bellhouse.
You will need a shorter driveshaft.

Hey Pintony? Is that a true 5 speed with a 1 to 1 fifth gear or is that one a 4 speed with an overdrive?Ive been wanting an OD for my 73 wagon. What years on that trans you recommended? Everything else but the driveshaft works? KOOL! As long as it bolts to the original bell I wouldnt even mind modifying the crossmember. Shifter fits the original hole or pretty close? Thanx in advance.

Tony, is that T-9 an overdrive ?
Looked at some other posts about a T-5 ,if the T-9 is one to one in 5 gear that's the same as what I have, is the T-9 an acutal overdrive tranny ?
Or is the T-5 the same ? Because it is an overdrive typye, shows .085 as final on the tranny gear on the T-9, maybe the T-5 won't bolt up to the 2000 just not sure, sorry for the questions but trying to get a plan together
Thanks for the help, put the biggest tires I could fit under it and still looking for more.

The T9 is an overdrive transmission.
It is the same transmission as the Pinto hummer but with an overdrive.
"Cast Iron Case"
The XR bell may even work, I'm not sure...
I do know the trans is a bit longer.
You may be able to use an automatic Pinto driveshaft if you use the 4speed yoke.
I know it works BUT I do not have the T9 transmission installed in a Pinto at this time.

Neil, please refer to the Technical FAQ form and look at the T-5 T-9 post for gear ratio info.
I have a T-5 out of an 1986 SVO bolted to my 2.0 and use a stock length drive shaft.

Based on the 77/78/79 parts I have:
A/t - 48" on-center on u-joints
M/t - 47" on-center on u-joints

Thanks Bill,
I guess I had it switched around??
I thought the auto tranny D-S was shorter???

Hey Brad do you know if the 6 cyl t5 will also work with the 72 2000cc? Do they share the same shaft size as the 4 cyl units?

I believe the C4 trannys are longer than the C3's, so they might be. I only have info on the 'later' ones without the C4 or 8". I had a shaft that was marked "2000 Pinto" that was 45.5" O/C. If that was correct, it was most likely from a C4/8" car because that is the lenght needed for that application.

Thanks for reminding me Tony, I did make an update to the info in that post.

Hey guys it's much easier to find a T-5 than a t-9 from a merkur so if it bolts in  why not use the T-5?

I got a T-9 from a Merkur. Any offers?

Bad news: it's in Soldier, Iowa. But I will deliver to Omaha or even Sioux City or Ames.

The t-5 is NOT a simple bolt-in. Especially for the 2.0
