Evidently there was a project to figure out what kinds of cars people in the tri-state area (NY, CT, and NJ) drive and the results were presented in a graphical/tabular type of style, I believe in the Saturday, December 1, 2007 edition. The piece was called "The Things We Drive," and credited to Christopher Jensen. I *think* you can bring it up as a .jpg image here:

Anyway, the key part of the article is called "Confounding Vehicular Darwinism" (look for the Gremlin graphic header), which I'll transcribe below:
"Some vehicles have pluckily escaped oblivion. There are 64 Yugos in the three states, 50 in New York. New York also has 4,196 Pontiac Azteks, above right, one of the least-graceful vehicles ever created. New Jersey has 1,679 amd Connecticut has a diabolical 666. Other amazing survivors include 92 AMC Gremlins, top; 63 AMC Pacers, above left; 10 of the super S.U.V. Lamborghinis called the LM002; 307 DeLoreans; 257 Chevrolet Vegas and 407 Ford Pintos."
As you can see, they saved best for last!
Nice find!

Yes, I think you're right. I was frankly not surprised to see active Pintos outnumbering Vegas (since I'm not at all impressed with the Vegas I've seen), but the way they thoroughly outnumber the Gremlins and Pacers was a little surprising--I'll guess that is more a function of how many were sold in the first place, comparatively.
