Title: Change 73 Pinto 1600 ignition to 79 Fiesta ignition
Post by: Starliner on November 30, 2007, 09:14:17 PM
Right now I have the dual vacuum diaphram distributor in my 73 Pinto 1600.   I don't like the advance transition from manifold vacuum to venturi vacuum while at the same time it is interacting with the mechanical advance.     I don't think I can get the smooth advance curve I want messing with the dual advance distributor I have.

Pintony noted that the Fiesta has the same 1600 motor only that it has newer technology.    I did some more research, and yeah, he is right.  I plan to try 1978 or 1979 Fiesta ignition with the single vacuum advance.  I can run the electronic ignition, better cap & rotor, larger plug wires, and open up the plug gaps.   (Fiesta has the same module & igniter as the Pinto 2300, but different distributor)  I ordered a Fiesta wiring and vacuum service manual.

Some questions on the conversion...
1)  Is the 79 Fiesta vacuum advance attached to manifold vacuum or venturi vacuum in stock configuration?
2)  At the Rock Auto site, It calls out for an igniter and a control module.   Why are there two items and what are their function?
3)  Has anyone performed this conversion?   How was the results?

Thanks in advance

I would hook up to the ported (venturi) vacumm. Way back when I was running my 77 if I used manifold vacumm it would hesitate on takeoff and wouldn't on ported.
