Title: stalling.........Ignition problem????
Post by: EMTcop on November 25, 2007, 10:11:06 PM
I noticed last night when I took the blue beast out it keep stalling, not like a gunked carb stall but like the car just shuts off? The longer I drive it gets better. Could this be an ignition problem? Ive changed the plugs & wires & distributer? any suggestions ???

Either the magnetic pickup inside the distributor is going bad, or the coil is going bad.
I've had both happen to me

Could be the PU in the dist
The Coil is most likely OK.
Do the easy stuff first.
Pull the air cleaner when cold and warm to normal temps to make sure the choke is working properly.
Drive the car untill it stalls and check the position of the choke plate B4 restarting.
If the choke plate is shut then you have found your problem.
To set the choke drive your pinto untill quite warm and then adjust the choke to where it just starts to close the plate. then back off 1/2 notch.
Could be that the reo-stat has broken inside the housing.
The choke linkage may also have some slop,so check that.
AGAIN this is the easy stuff B4 you spend money on parts that do not fix the problem.
If all is ok?? Replace the ignition module on the drivers inner fender.

What year is the car?  I cant tell from the pic. If its 75+ (or a 74 with electronic ignition) it could be the ignition module making it do that. Tho when its the module sometimes it wont restart right away. But it could.

I agree with pintoguy76,It sounds like the module. After having this happen with 2 different modules we went to points. No more problems

I had the same thing happen with a '75 Mustang II 2.3 that I had.  It was the ignition module that was bad, and I had a run of two or three of them that would last a couple of months, and then the same symptoms.  Finally got lucky and got one that worked.

I had that problem with a few new modules too. But they always tested good. It wouldnt always restart afterwards but it would alot of the time. Finally one time it happened and wouldnt restart so i went out and unplugged the module and then plugged it back in and it was fine. Actually dont think ive had any problem with it since then. So that was a bad connection issue it sounds like. When replacing the module i would clean up the connectors and terminals real good and put new dilectric grease on them. That will probably prevent that from happening.
