As some of you probably have seen in previous posts, my 76 sedan somehow ended up with an 8" rear when it has absolutly NO options whatsoever. Or so i believe. Im wondering if it was ordered with positrac and that the trac locs were 8" rears. Some have said the 6.75's had trac loc available but have never actually seen one. (thatd be the only option it has lol). However i broke the tag off of it a few years back looking for the ratio. I remember the ratio being 3.00 but i dont remember if it indicated a trac loc or not. The tag is long gone now. What is another way to tell if its trac loc or not? Sometimes it feels like it might be limited slip and sometimes it doesnt. I seem to power thru mud ok, gets pretty muddy here and i park in the yard sometimes (too many toys for the driveway). And earlier the ground was wet, i felt one wheel slip momentarily a couple times in a slick spot on the road. Other times ive spun on takeoff in slick spots on the road and hardly moved. But overall the traction on this car seems incredible. Ive never had problems getting around in snow or ice. However, last year i almost got my wagon stuck on a lil patch of ice on the road. All i can say is thank god for manual transmissions so you can ease up verrry slowly on the clutch. its got 3.55 gears and a 6.75" rear that im pretty sure isnt posi. Anyone got any ideas? Ty.
Hello pintoguy76,
Your problem is as simple as this.
Jack both rear tires off the ground.
Put the car in neutral gear and rotate the rear tires.
If both rear tires turn the same way then your 8" rear is posi.
If the tires rotate in oposite direction then they are open gear.
If your rear was posi then your tag would have read 3: L 00
From Pintony
My wagon has a 3:18 posi with 6.75 rear end., but the tag dose not indicate that it is a posi. the wheels turn as a posi and it has posi fluid in it. my door tag is listed as "4" which i am unable to locate in my ford service manuals, but was able to id rear end from tag.
I had a mechanic look the car over last year before a road trip and that is how i found it to be a posi. when he check the fluid level.
Phils toys.
I want to say that with both wheels off the ground, that the other wheel doesnt move when you turn the one. But i'm not 100% certain on that, id have to actually go try that again. Its been a while since ive done that. I cant remember if the tag had the L in there or not.
