Hello,
I'm new here. I need to relocate a Pinto (1973) with low compression in one cylinder. On the chance I need to replace the head are there any other heads (likely from a self serve wrecking yard) that swap out with the 1973 2.0. I have some background with these engines as I have had a 88 Turbo Coupe for 10+ years and have replaced the head (twice).
If you would, what parts if any are interchangeable between a 2.3 (not necessarily the turbo motor) and 2.0? I was hoping the 2.0 head would swap out completely with a 2.3, but as I investigate there seems to be many variations. What about the 2.0 found in some of the Rangers, would that work in my 73 2.0?
Thank you for any help. I'll be embarking on this relocation journey on Thursday and am trying to decide if in my 4 day window I would be better off towing ($450+) or attempting to repair the unknown cause of the low compression and then driving 400 miles. Neither are appealing to me.
Please fell free to copy this to another forum if it will get me more responses.
Thank, Tom
Hello Tom,
I'm going out on a limb here..
Is your Pinto a white wagon???
Nothing from a Pinto 2.0 will interchange with a 2.3.

Tom,
As Pintotony says, not much interchanges interchanges between the Pinto 2.0 and 2.3 engines (definitely not the head). In the junk yard, look for 71 to 74 Pintos and about the same vintage Capri's for the German 2.0. The Ranger 2.0 is a debored 2.3 engine, so nothing interchanges with the 2.0 German engine. I suspect there are other models built with the German 2.0, but I do not know which ones.
If your 2.0 only has low compression in one cylinder, it may be able to make the trip on its own. Just do not put heavy loads on it.
Hello oldkayaker,
I think Tom needs a machine shop, not a junk yard.
The only thing he will find there is most likely worse than what he has already.
Tom,
Pull the rocker cover and look for a broken valve spring or a flat cam lobe.

Thank you all for your replies. Your input has helped me decide. I have opted for the trailer. The thought of getting stranded by myself hundreds of miles from home isn't appealing and could ultimately be more expensive.
The motor is coming out anyway. My '88 Turbo Coupe, 5 speed marginally failed smog (but runs great). The body isn't that great. Need I say any more.
Is there a used market for the 1973 German 2.0, or the Auto trans (is it a C-4 or a C-3)?
Well, this makes the third "project" to interrupt the restoration of my low budget Sunbeam Tiger. Regardless I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks again, Tom
That would be a C4.

Thank you everyone for your input. After many miles (in tow) the Pinto now resides at my home. While I'm going to install my 2.3 Turbo/ 5 Speed from my 88 T.C., I did attempt to make the 2.0 serviceable (until the transplant) as it was only running on three cylinders. While the cam had all it's lobes, the exhaust clearances were vertually non-existent. I adjusted the valves, cleaned the plugs and did the "water spray" de-carbonizing. While it doesn't run fabulous, it is functional and has 4 cylinders contributing.
Is there any posting section of these forums best suited for the transplant of the 2.3 turbo?
And while I'm on the subject has anyone used the T-Bird 8.8 rearend in the Pinto? I can always weld on the spring perches. From my quick measurement it seems about 5+ inches too wide (but thought I'd ask). Pick A Part has 50% off this weekend and if the 8.8 won't work I'm going after a 8".

:welcome: Tom!
Do you have any photos of your Pinto?
What part of the country are you in?
