Title: 2.3 Cam follower removal

Tomorrow after work I'm going to the salvage yard to get a cam for my car. My question is how do you remove the cam followers from the head in order to get the cam out? I don't want to damage them or the cam that I'm getting.

A metric socket set to get the valve cover off ,a sharp razor knife to cut the belt, a Big Hammer to wack <-> the top of the cam towers (don't hit the cam) lift the cam out, your done in 8 min..

ok.. One question won't wacking the cam towers hurt the head? I'm not concerned with the junkyard engine, but am about the engine in my car. Don't wanna kill it just yet  ;D

Big screwdriver under the cam to the top of the valve spring retainer, just move the valve spring down enough to pop out the sliders. 2 Philips head screws behind the last cam tower hold the cam retainer..Make sure you loosen the cam bolt before you take the belt off..

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll keep all that in mind when I'm changing the cam on the car. Hopefully it'll be worth it.

The slider followers are much easier to work with. I made my own tool for this job. With mine, the 'slider' followers go in/out on the opposite side of the cam from the tool, but when I do the rollers, I have to istall/remove them from the 'tool' side. This is due to the size of the roller part. Not a big deal.

The tool in the link looks like it can be easy to make WITHOUT welding, with stuff you can get at Home Depot. I would just use long bolts and washers in place of the blocks of wood described. The only bad part with this tool is you MIGHT have to remove the alt., alt. bracket, carb. or any other item that might get in the way of it when pushing it down on the valve. IMHO: A small price to pay. The one I made has a handle at a 90* angle, but mine is welded.

Remember to rotate the cam so the lobe on the one you are doing is facing up.

Some questions for the discussion...
1)  If you go with a used cam, shouldn't you take the same cam followers also and match them up.  They have worn together.  -OR-  new cam followers.
2)  With all the work, why not a new cam, cam followers, timing belt??
3)  I rebuilt a 2000 engine for my old dune buggy.  If I remember correctly the cam came out the back.  Is the 2300 the same?

No, the 2.3 comes out the front. Yes I have the followers with the new cam. Sorta had to as it's a roller cam from a Ranger. No I'm not going to replace the timing belt. I did that last year. I won't put in a new cam, because I cannot afford it & found a roller cam in a Ford Ranger with next to no wear , with followers only $30. Any more questions?  ;D

But I think that is how you steal a cam. LOL
