Hey all, I have a major issue with my trunk seal on my Pinto. The corners are rusted away & the trunk leaks water. I have a pic besically showing where it's leaking. it is under the trunk lid where the seal goes. I'll try to get an actual picture posted later

Prolly shoulds said what I'm trying to find out is how can I fix this? get a graft from another Pinto sedan & weld in the new pieces or just use some sheet metal to fix it?
matt,
Good to see you back. Do you need a new trunk lid? i have one from a 74 .
Phils toys
Phil, good to be back.
No, the trunk lid is fine. It's the part underneath where the seal goes. I'll dig out my digital cam tomorrow & take a pic of the part I'm referring to.
Well, I coudn't get a picture of my problem area so I marked a pic I have of a mustang II open trunk to get more of an idea where the problem is.

the circled areas show where the trunk seal area is rusted badly. What's the best way to fix this?
Finally got a couple pics of the rusted out corners I'm referring to. I need help on this please.

As you can see the metal is so rusted I can't just patch it with filler, but need new metal.
The question is, should I take a graft from another Pinto sedan, or try to make a replacement piece with sheet metal? Someone, please help. The fuct tape won't hold anymore.
Thats all flat. All I ever did was cut out the bad stuff and weld in repair sections from sheet metal (E-Z). I have repaired MUCH worse.
Bill
that looks like it would be easy enough to just patch with steel. cutting from another car seems a little excessive
That's the whole reason why I was asking. So I knew the better way to go. I'll end up going to Home Depot & picking up some sheet metal to fix that with. Would it be best to make a template out of some cardboard so I can get the cut right? I've never attempted this type of repair before so I want to make sure I'm going about it the right way.
once you get all the rotted metal cut out you can then trace the area onto a template to transfer onto the new piece of metal. i'd cut the new piece a little bigger then you think youll need the first time and trim it down to fit rather then accidentaly making it too small the 1st time. it shouldnt be too hard of a job. atleast its not really a visable area that needs to be perfect.
Gotcha. Thanks for the tips, both Maverick & 77turbopinto. I am still a novice when it comes to welding so like you said, atleast it won't be seen.
cant wait to see the end result ;D
That makes two of us. Next week I'm gonna buy some sheet metal from Home Depot & start planning my attack methods. In the mean time I'll just end up taping over the rust & holes again to try to keep water out.
