i got the interior out of our 71 then removed the heater core housing to clean out the cowl vent and found the biggest rust spot so the car aint going to have a heater now and we're going to cut the rust out and fill in the cowl vent it did have some rust on the floor but that should be an easy fixbut time will tell....................

Theres a lot of crap in the cowl vent and I was wondering how to get to it. I hadnt thought of the heater.

I think everyone's does. All of my Pinto's leak on the passenger side from the cowl into the floorboards. You just have to weld something to cover it.

Mine does the same thing. I was quite confused when I found a wet spot because it came from a pretty dry environment.
My car also has the same leak. The seam sealer was crumbing away, so for a temporary fix I went ahead and gooped it up with some windshield sealant. Hopefully that'll help stop the leak.
:( Mine has the same - on both sides. My wiper motor mount started to swing as it was only connected at the top. My wiper motor leads are disconnected and the wipers zip-tied to the cowl to keep things from moving. Soon as I can put the car up for the drive train change, I'll tear into the under-dash area with a vengeance!
I cleaned out my cowel vents through the heater box removal and the drivers cool air vent removal ,,,used a tooth brush bent with a heat gun ,,,,to clean around the steel fange and other area`s,,, even taped a stick to it to get the hard to reach spots,,, and a vacuumed it all out with just the hose only ,,,,,,,,,,,,so it could be bent to s u c k close to the egde of the flange......But first i power washed all i could get out from the top side of the cowel vents before i started on the inside ..........Also if you have a hole by the flange for the heater box,,make a new flange to fit over the old one,, and flare the bottom by cutting slits in the metal so that the bottom of the flange its larger than the rusted area apply sealer around the flange bottom where it meets the vent,,spot weld or rivet the flared bottom......to the cowel area and apply sealer over that as well....
