Hello all, I just bought my first ford pinto today, its a 1980. Any sugestions, The car seems to run ok but I noticed some oil in the air filter & it seems like its comming out of the "filter"?? on top of the valve cover? I dont know alot about cars, looking to learn I affaid to go to a auto shop, dont want to get ripped off? Im going to get a manual, but any ideas or suggestions for now until it comes? Thanks all
it sounds like blow by from the valve seals cracking from heat and age get the head rebuilt or at least get new seals installed..
Unfortunatly it sounds a bit more worse than that. It sounds like the rings are worn in it and allowing compression to leak from the combustion chamber into the crank case and then out the breather in the top of the valve cover. It comes out under pressure due to it leaking past the rings. If its not smoking too bad and using too much oil or blowing too much oil into the breather and thus plugging the filter, id just drive it while i found a new engine for it. For all its worth id just convert to a 2.3 EFI Turbo, or even a regular 2.3 EFI.

Emtcop. Welcome!!! Congradulations on your purchase and glad to think that Pinto got a loving Pinto home. I think the oil on your air filter is caused by crank case vent going the wrong way. Meaning the tube going from the air filter housing to the valve cover. This is the inlet for the PVC system and if the pvc valve is plugged up then the inlet air through the filter overpowers it by pulling the wrong way the wrong way. Replace your pvc valve and check the windway to the carb base. There might even be buildup in the carb spacer. Is you pin in the member map???

That would work too. Thatd be the cheaper way to start. Unfortunatly for me with my luck, things are never that simple. :( Im having that problem on the new 79 i just got, i figured it was blowby too, but i had it on my list to check the PCV valve but so far i have forgotten to check it.

Tie a string around your shifter.
