Title: 5.0 HO in my 1976 Bobcat....Will this work?
Post by: Jamie Plastic on November 02, 2007, 05:39:31 PM
Hello,

Thought I would call on you experts to ask a few questions.

I have an opportunity to get a very low milage 5.0 HO w/an automatic tranny out of a 87 Mustang.

Will this fit into my 1976 Mercury Bobcat Wagon?

Is this a very involved swap?

What will I need on the computer side of it?

Will I need to shorten the drive line?

Will I need to replace the stock rear end?

Any Help would be great!  Thanks

Hello,

...fit...

Please define.

Anything can be made to 'fit'.

The Mustang II bell will make things easier, BUT might not fit the tranny you plan to use.

Don't shorten the driveshaft, just get a shorter one.

More later.

Bill

If you plan on going with the injected intake, you'll need the ENTIRE engine harness. IIRC Ford makes a stand alone harness for the 5.0 H.O.
When I swapped the '88 5.0 into my StangII they didn't. I had the whole car to pull the harness from...what a PITA. You'll need either StangII exhaust manifolds, or headers, as the "shorties" on the stock 5.0 will hit the steering shaft.
The fitting of the engine won't be any harder than any other V8 swap. The electronics may be, if you don't get the motorsport harness, a bit more involved. I also can't say if the intake will clear the hood, it barely did on my Stang, and I ended up smashing the TPS when a motor mount let go.
I say if you can get the motor fairly cheap, go for it! If nothing else you can get a carb'd intake & an MSD disty.
The AOD in the '87 Stangs is a pretty robust, and "dumb" auto box. It will however require some "massaging" of the trans tunnel. (think sledge hammer) A C4 with a Stang II bellhousing will fit better.
Oh yeah & unless you have the 8" rear end, yeah you'll need to replace the axle. IIRC the Bobcat wagons had the 8", especially if they had the V6. If you have the 8" open diff this will be a one tire shredding BEAST!

Jamie Plastic,
I documented my entire v8 conversion here on FordPinto.  I used a 74 302 stuck to a c4 out of a 76 grand Marquee and put it in a 77 wagon v6. As I did not know better I did not put it on a single thread so you would have to search back in the progects section to see. I will say this...it is allot easier doing a v6 car as I did not need to change the rear end cause v6's had 8 inchers.
