what is this??
here is another shot
Saw those on "the bay" myself, was wondering what was up with those. All those pics are being sold individually!
Still looking for a noble steed!!!!!!
have to be early concept vehicle. they look like cougar tail lights!
at first i thought it was a camaro rip off cause of the tail lights they look like 69 camro lights.. but then it also the front end looks like the pintera a little
In the head on shot it looks like a convertable.
In the rear shot it looks like a hard top.
???
Yeah, thats kinda funny :o
Front end looks like a kit-car clip. I'm thinking it may be for an English roadster (can't remember the name off hand...it's on my Test Drive 6 game). Rear end made me think 'Cuda at first. Possibly using a Mustang II body with Pinto (or M-II or Maverick) front quarters. It's been so long since I owned my M-II and Comet that I can't say how close they are to Pinto front quarters, but I know they're similar.
The top may be a hard-top/soft-top combo: put the soft-top down and latch on the hard-top. Maybe it's just a Photoshopped concept.
I like the look. If it's a real car, it's well done.
yeah i thought that it might be photoshopped but i do alot of images in photoshop and it looks like it could of, but then again it looks like its stock. if it is photoshopped then i have to say thats some mighty good work.
I'd say it's a "proof of concept" model. look at the .PDF of "petersen's complete book of pinto" on pg. 4 you'll see a "coupe" bodystyle with a nearly production ready nose. I'd say that these pics are from that car's immediate predecessor (maybe they saw the styling of the Vega & decided it's apperance was too close)
yeah thats true
it is a concept car....because the building in the background is the Ford "skunkworks" building were they did the design and clay mock ups....this could be a clay mock up, not even a real car!
Look at both pics...in one pic the top appears to be a "rag" and is BLACK even towards the back corner of it. The second pic appears to be a hardtop but is RED as far as you can see the top! There is another over there that has the Mav/Comet rear end look.
the taillights are standard '70 Torino units (from the versions that were not GTs...)

Judging by how close together they are on the red picture, the car IS sized like a Pinto...
here are some more
:)
:)
thats a sharp looking pinto
I think the side view of the red car confirms my first post.
It's a Pinto convertible with both a soft and hard top. You can put the soft top down and put the hard top on, put the soft top up, or drive top down.
Obviously, it's a two-seater. This idea probably got scrapped for several reasons, the safety issue of convertibles (at the time) being among them. The fact it would have put the Pinto in direct competition with the Corvette (a two-seater, sporty convertible) probably would have cost Ford sales in the long run with a car that had no clear demographic direction...it's a two-seater sport convertible, it's a hatchback grocery getter, it's a wagon...that would put a real strain on the marketing department and the consumer's mindset. This is also an early-stage mock-up as given away by the bumpers. This may have been pre-production or within the first couple years of production. Ford may have been looking back at the early Thunderbird concept (2-seater sports car). It's almost as if the car is trying to be a Shelby Cobra (open oval nose with no bumper), Mustang, and '55 Thunderbird all at once.
Also, the later photos prove that these are clearly clay mock-ups. You can see the support braces under the cars better (and if you go back and look at the earlier photos, you can see them in the shadows). Other tell-tale indications are the fact there are no springs showing around the rear wheel wells in the back and side views.
Still, it gives Pinto-based customizers something to think about.
Hmmmm....
yes the car in the pics was a concept car for the pinto was a removable hard top with a conv top the taillights are out of the 70 torino not gt only 2 were built never put in to prudion as i have seen alot of concept cars built by ford
fairmont
I like the way that pinto looks, but its a good thing ford didn't go with it. There would be zero trunk space after they put the gas tank in, and the bumper laws in 73 would have either cause a major redo of the body or killed the car all together. Not to mention it wouldn't have fit what they were looking for to begin with, which is a small passenger car with decent room.
But it would've been a cool car. Should've launched it as another model.
A small aerodynamic car that weighed 1900 lbs with a maybe the 2.0 as the base and 200 linline 6 as the upgrade engine.
would've sold like hotcakes.
