Quick rear diff question. Will a 8inch sedan diff bolt right in a wagon? I know its a dumb question, but I just need to know. Thanks.

All Ford 8" carriers are the same. All Pinto rear axles (housings) will interchange with two exeptions; the 80 models call for a different rear u-joint (?), and driveshaft lengths are different between cars with the 6.75" and 8".

Hey Bill
You sure about the drive line.When we did the 8 in in my 80 all we had to do was pull it out of the 76 and throw it in the 80 never even pulled the drive line out of the trans.
Yes. I took detailed measurments on an 8" and a 6.75" and the 8" pushes the driveshaft forward ABOUT the same amount as the difference between a C3 and the 4spd. driveshft. The 4spd.'s take a shorter driveshaft, and because I had one, I put it in my car when I did the 8", and it is now in Connie's car. Some people just swap the rears and push the yoke further into the tranny, but if you don't at least clean the rust off, you will eat the seal (might anyway depending). I like having some 'wiggle room' at the slip yoke.
As I mentioned, I don't know why the 80's call for a different u-joint (NAPA), but I can tell you that some people have swapped driveshafts (like from a Fox body) not knowing that the u-joint caps are different sizes. The 71-79 Pinto rear u-joints have two different diameter caps, the smaller are used for all four on the Fox body cars. It will bolt in to the Pinto pinon yoke, BUT it will not holt the cap correctly, and can cause premature wear or worse...

Hey Bill
As you described we just pushed the drive line in the extra distance but the u joint for the 76 diff was the same as the 80 it was a perfect fit and lasted 12 yrs on that diff.We then installed a new center from a 65 mustang and it fit that one also.When we installed the t5 we ended up using the SVO front yoke and a drive line from a 78 LTD and had to use the pintos u joint as the LTD shaft didn't have one and that one is still in the car.I'm not to sharp on this subject as i have not had a u joint failure in a pinto YET.
Doc.
I am glad you never had any issues. I did say "CAN" cause premature wear or worse, not "WILL".
If you ever get the chance, bolt up an incorrect cap to the pinon and look at it closely.
BTW: I know that FoMoGo hates doing u-joint stuff.

Wow.... Ok. I am getting another 74 wagon for demo, and it has the 6.75, and I want to put an 8 inch so I can put 4:11's or 4:56's in it. I am running it in the Tacoma Dome monster truck show derby in Jan, so I need to find things out soon. I guess I should have asked it the leaf sprigs are the same.
Dude......
Demo car ?? ??
EVERYTHING FITS !! !! !! !!
Posi = WELD
Rear Swap = Cut/Weld
Springs = Weld/Cut
Gears = What you FIND
Good luck, don't get hurt,
Bill
Dan-
The leaf springs from a sedan to a wagon are different. The sedan springs are shorter and the shackles are different. Also the sedan has 4 in the spring pack and the wagon has 5. I have put wagon springs under a sedan, you have to do a little modifying, but nothing too serious. Stick with the wagon springs if you can. Use the driveshaft from the 8 inch car, it is shorter than the one from the 6.75" car. You will need the extra space from the yoke to the tailshaft if you use the front a lot.
