someone in my neck of the woods is selling a ford 255 v8 for pretty cheap (everything but carb for $100) i wanted some input on this engine from you guys before i bought it. i know i could look it up but i also wanted your opinions
thank you
Another tree hugger idea that didn't work....
"In 1980, an urgent need to meet EPA CAFE standards led to the creation of the 255 cu in (4.2 L) version, essentially a 302 de-bored to 3.68 in (93.5 mm). Rated power (SAE net) was 115-122 hp (86-91 kW), depending on year and application. It was optional in Fox chassis cars including the Mustang and corporate cousin Mercury Capri, Thunderbird, Fairmont, and standard equipment in the Ford LTD. Poorly received thanks to its dismal performance and mediocre fuel economy, it was dropped after the 1982 model year, and is considered one of the worst modern Ford engines."
from what i can tel they only made them in 80-81 so parts might be hard to find.
if it is a 255 it should have a blosk casting # E0SE
What's really funny is they were an option in 82. A 255 with 111 HP..... Or a 302 with 157 HP Hmmmmm.... Heard they actually gave you a small credit if you got the 255. Maybe they were getting rid of old stock..... Or Chevy was paying the difference :)
i had one of those in a 1980 Fairmont wagon that we bought new. it ran alright; certainly no barn burner but it DID get 26 miles to he gallon. i pulled it after it spun a rod bearing and the dealer/factory wouldn't cough up to fix it. a buddy had a wrecked mustang with a 302 HO that i swapped in with a set of Hooker headers and a 3:55 rear gear

Obviously you've never heard of the 1975 Chevy 262 V8 with a screaming 110hp, or the 79-82 Chevy 267. These were both phased out and replaced with the 125-160hp (depending on year) 305.

well to be honest, I can't really remember. My wife didn't like it after that! So I started driving it and my right foot gained weight too. (funny how that happens) I don't think it reached anywhere near 26. Probably down to around 20 or so in the street. We did take a few freeway trips of several hundred miles that I remember but with the lower gear in the back the mileage couldn't have been appreciably better
