Aside from the diff tag, are there any other ways to tell the gear ration in my '77? (mine is coated in undercoating ewww)
To get the undercoat off the tag you can try spraying with carb or brake cleaner several times, letting it soak in and wipe off. Another way is to take the tag off and heat it up with a propane bottle to get the undercoat soft then it should wipe off. A wire wheel on a grinder motor will also remove the undercoat.

Look on the drivers door pillar.
There should be a fixed sticke that has a code.\

PonyGal,
Place a brick or equal size peice of 2 by 4 in front of and back of the front driver wheel so the car won't roll. Lift the rear passenger wheel off of the ground with a floorjack. Place the shifter in the neutral position. Rotate the tire around once (marking it is helpfull) while counting how many times the drive shaft rotates. Multipy the number of driveshaft revolutions by 2. Then write :1 to the right of that sum. It should look like this X.XX:1. That is your gear ratio.

Awesome, found out I've got a 3.18 via door code. Thanks guys!

Hey Ponygal,
Most automatic Pintos are 3:18 rear geared....
Has anyone seen anything lower than 3:18 in a Pinto NUMERICALLY??
From Pintony
IIRC my 78 is geared either 2.98 or 3.00
not seen one lower.
Every Pinto/Bobcat I have ever owned has had either a 3.18 or 2.79 rear (until I changed them).
