Title: my 1st engine build
Post by: pintoches on October 14, 2007, 06:07:47 PM
well I'm starting my first engine build   I chose a 289  because it will fit in most of the ford cars i like. not sure if I'm going to keep it a 289 or make it a 302.

my block casting # are
C6AE-6015-C
makes it a 65-68 289
6 bolt bell housing
bore 4.00
deck 8.206

head casting #
C80E
MAKES THEM
68 289 OR 302
63.CC
valve diameter
in 1.67"
exh1.45

I finshed all the tear down to day hope to sent to the shop on Tuesday.
from there i will post what i find.

Pintoches,
There is nothing like a engine build. Keep the pics comming and good luck. Don't hesitate if you have any questions.

Keep at it. All the hard work really pays off in the end when you see your ride coming together.

I'm really thinking about putting this engine in my 72 pinto.

What engine mounts do you all use?
the old book i have on v-8 pinto seams out of date. it says to use steel plates bolted to the front of the heads. is this a good way or is there some thing better/safer.

also the book says the mustang II oil pan is the way to go. is there any other options.

Sounds like that $8. (#%$*@!!) book on ebay that is the biggest waste of money........  Tossed mine in the trash the day I got it 5 years ago. (#%$*@!!)

Sorry, when I get started on that (#%$*@!!) book......      GRRRRR........

Anyway, no, DON'T do the plate thing the way the book says, you will regret it. If you make plates, modifiy them to have a rubber mount (hockey puck) of some sort. I tell EVERYONE that is thinking about a V8 swap the same thing: DON'T USE THE MUSTANG II ENGINE MOUNTS!! they are a waste of money; the Mustang II frame brackets need to be modified to fit into ANY Pinto, and you need to rework everything anyway, SO JUST modify the stock Pinto brackets and get aftermarket early Mustang mounts for $30. a pair.

Also, if you plan to drop the engine as deep as you can in the bay, get a G.R. starter. It will give you that little bit of room you need to keep your bell safe from damage. The only other close point is the rack to the pan; the power rack has a larger diameter body and needs the engine to be higher.

IIRC: That book mentions the modification of a non-MII front sump oil pan. Basicly you need to remove a section or dent it in the area just where the sump ends (where it is close to the steering rack when installed).

The  289 was crap.

The block is good it has no cracks. it however has to be bored over a least .30

The crank is bad the 2nd and 4th mains are bad

Rods have to be resized.

Well since the crank and rods need repair, i will get a 302 crank and rods.

For now I will wait to see if some thing comes along.

I'm really thinking about putting this engine in my 72 pinto.

]Read my post titled "71 V-8 swap, let the fun begin" under "Your Projects". I outlined the swap into an early body with pics. It's a lot more work to do the swap in a 71, 72, or 73 than the 74 up. I love the V-8 power but I still have my eyes open for a 2.3 turbo.  :look:

I'm looking at getting my old 77 trunk back!

I had to put off meeting the guy for the pistons, but I go next weekend. He is a huge mustang II owner. IM also getting a oil pan and pickup, is there any other mustang II I need to swap
