Title: Fuel pump to carb line broken......
Post by: pintoguy76 on October 01, 2007, 09:32:35 PM
I just picked up a 79 pinto that has sat for the last 16 years. I am not 100% positive but am convinced atleast that the fuel pump is bad. When cranking  the engine i dont feel anything at the line where it connects to the carb. Removal of the  fuel inline line reveals liquid fuel still. So, i am sure its bad. Anyways i disconnected the inlet and return lines to the pump, and attempted to remove the steel line going from the pump to the carb. The nut was frozen. Completly. i took the whole pump off, line and all, and still couldnt get it loose. That puppy is on there and its not coming off. Even the correct size wrench stripped the nut. A pair of vice grips on it as tight as i could get it, still stripped. Anyways i have a brand new pump for it, but no way of connecting the pump to the carb since the outlet is a threaded fitting and not a barbed style fitting for a hose to push on. I went to the hardware store and took the pump with me. I got a 1/4 inch threaded barbed fitting with a 1/4 inch hose barb on the other side. It starts to screw into the pump but gets very tight after just a part of a turn inwards. I guess the  question that goes with this story is, is the pump equipped with a metric outlet? Or is it fine threaded or what? Or do is it supposed to fit tight? i have no idea. I cant start this thing until i am certain i have air fuel and spark. No fuel pump  means no fuel. The Control module spilled its guts down the side of the car (the sticky stuff on the back side of it) so i assume it needs a new module too but i dont know. I did get some smoke  out the carb once when i poured fuel down the top and cranked it, but it never sounded or felt like it actually hit and tried to start) The car supposedly ran when it was parked, even if it was 16 years ago. Ive got the carb off and apart now but its getting a kit in the morning and then will go back on. Thats when ill need to figure out the pump thing, and ill be checking for spark and all that. Maybe, just maybe, if i am lucky it will start. I am going to run fuel to it from a gas can until i get the tank and the lines cleaned. I think they are clear where some fuel did leak out when i removed the line from the pump, but i sure wouldnt want to pump that old fuel into my rebuilt carb, or that engine. I'll let you all know the results when i get them, but in the mean time i need some advice on what to do.  Try and find some metric flare nuts and make a new line... or..screw in that barbed fitting i got or..... (am open to suggestions here.....)

Thanks guys

You looking for the correct metal line?  I have one I just pulled off my 79 Bobcat.  It is a little dirty but it is in good shape.  Let me know....

Anyway, back to your problem.  I would drop your tank and drain it.  You may have a bunch of crud in it.  My Bobcat had a hard time getting fuel at times.  I replaced the pump with a working used one but it never worked on the car, just on the bench.  I ended up buying a new one and it too had problems.  After looking at it closer, the rubber lines near the frame rail were all deteriorated.  Once I replaced them, I finally got fuel.  The car ran fine after that but after I let it sit a couple months without starting, I had the same problem again.  No fuel.  I think the fuel lines are plugged from the tank?  It will be interesting to see if the tank is any good from this car and what crud is in it.  Good luck

Yeah I could probably use that line that way i dont have to worry about it. What do you want for it? Shipping to 65806? I'll work on the tank tomorrow i hope. No way am i removing the lines tho, ill blow them out with my compressor. They are such a pain in the buttox to remove and reinstall correctly. About as bad as brake lines almost. Yikes! :) Thanks for the reply.

You could always Just cut the line with a hacksaw and use a rubber line and get the fitting line at home depot they usually carry all types of fittings that will work ....Just a thought.

I took it to work with me and put the flare nut in a vice and put a wrench on the pump and loosed it that way. then transferred it to the new mechanical pump which doesnt seem to pump anyways so i just put an electric pump on it and let it push fuel thru the mechanical pump. the mech pump helps it along a little. The mech pump will pull fuel  a litttle ways just doesnt seem to want to lift it so it does help some just wont run on it exclusivly.

Sorry, I did not know you replied to me.  You still interested in the metal fuel line?
