can any one ID this axle tag
Looks like a 2.79 gear, 8"rear, from a 75 V8 Mustang Fastback
So than it will make a better chose than the axle in my pinto.

A 2.79 and a 4 cylinder does not make a good combination..
Reall doggy and have to spin the clutch to take off.
So NO! Not in my opinion.

"Better" as defined by what?
Tony is correct, it will be kind of tall, but Ford did make Pintos that way to get 'better' mileage.

I have been thinking about using the 289 that i have as it will be the cheapest way to get the power and performance i want
so i should have said is it a good choice behind a 289 (goal 350hp) with a C-4

Wtih that much power, I would think that would be perfect.
My 'stock' 302/C4 has a 3.00 rear and it does well. I have a few 2.79's around that I have thought of installing to do better on the highway spinning these 215/60-14's

My dad's 67 Mustang has 2.79s behind a stock 289 2bbl/C4, and it'll spin the tires coming out of a parking lot. Plenty of pep, and a Pinto is quite a bit lighter than a 67 Mustang.
