Title: Exhaust pipe from ground distance
Post by: dave1987 on September 05, 2007, 03:33:32 AM
Is the exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter supposed to hang lower than the undercarriage on a 78 Sedan? I've noticed my pipe will bottom out when going over speed bumps sometimes. From the lowest part of the pipe to the lowest part of the undercarriage, it's about 4 inches. Is there something wrong here??

Is your exhaust factory stock or has it been replaced at one point?

It is factory. I was told by my dad that he hammered out the inside of the catalytic converter because it was causing the engine to misfire. I don't know if he had to drop the whole pipe to get the unit down though.

So I was pulling the last few bits and pieces I though I might need off of a 74 wagon at the salvage yard today and I looked at the mounts for the exhaust pipe. It has a 2.3 in it just like my Sedan, but it has a bracket that is bolted to the engine where the starter cable guide is bolted to. The bracket is basically just a rounded piece of metal that conforms to one side of the pipe, and then a U-bolt that clamps around the pipe and is then secured to the engine block by a single bolt. Is this how it comes stock from the factory and could it be the reason my pipe hangs so close to the ground?
