I have a 78 pinto with a 4 speed. Its been sitting for a couple of months... well since the meet we had in oklahoma.
I went to drive it the other day and I could not engage the tranny in any gear with the engine running. With the engine off I can place the shifter in all four gears and reverse with no issues.
I finally got it pushed into the shop to get it on the lift to do a visual. As my son depressed the clutch pedal I can see everything moving just fine. Cable is fine, throwout bearing is sliding back and forth. Can't see anything out of the ordinary.
Open to any suggestions on where the problem is or what may be causing it...
Seems as though the clutch is not disengaging...
Hello TulsaTurbo,
First of all SHAME on U for taking so long to drive your Pinto after the Tulsa meet. ;D
Seems very strange....
Have you tried to start your Pinto in gear with the clutch depressed???
From Pintony
Yes, I would try what Pintony suggests to qualify if the clutch works.
The problem you could have is two fold.
1) Check your transmission fluid level. If the level is low the parts do not want to stop spinning.
2) You may need to do like Pintony suggested and start and stop many times in first gear. You may have rust on the flywheel & clutch dics causing it to drag keeping the trans input shaft spinning.
I just got back from 8 months in China. I had my beater 73 1600 sitting outside the whole time. It acted like that when I first got it going.

Yup, shame on me... I'm a baaaaaad booooyyy! ;D

I have tried to start it with the clutch pedal pressed in and also out numerous times. I even got it to go in reverse once by force with the clutch pedal pressed in and engine running at a real low idle to see if whatever is locked up would loosen itself but no help, the car just jumped and shut off...
Hello TulsaTurbo,
Has your carp[et fallen Possibally not allowing the pedal to go down all the way???
At what point do U feel the pedal having enough resistance to start operating the clutch???
From Pintony
This is a tough 1
Possibally no tranny grease and your input shaft has galded to the output shaft and now R 1>>>
Sounds like the disc is stuck to the flywheel and P/P. Very common for cars that sit. NORMALLY starting it in gear with the clutch in will free it, but if not, you are looking at pulling it apart.
Bill
I went ahead and pulled the tranny today...
The clutch disk was stuck to the flywheel. I had to pry the disk off with a screwdriver after removing the pressure plate...
I'll get the flywheel resurfaced tomorrow and install a new clutch, pp, pilot bearing and throwout bearing after I change the crank rear seal while its accessable...
Thanks to everyone for all the input...

Here it is for those who might be interested...
Standard thread: 5/16 x 24
Hey TulsaTurbo,
The problem is that each rebuilder may not use the same stud for the battery cable.
I have some starters W/ fine and some W/ coarse threads.
Unfourtunately I have never had a reason to use a tap or die on these so I was
UN-AWARE of the count or Dia.
Sorry I could not help...
From Pintony
Ah, no problem Pintony...
I guess the main thing that confuses me on this car is that some things are metric and others standard. Mostly I work on imports so all the extra hardware I have is metric.
Just one of those things... ;D
By the way my pinto now shifts like a dream, especially after I servicing the tranny with new fluid...
Hey TulsaTurbo,
It's COOL that your Pinto is up and running again.
Do U have any plans for your Pinto or R U too buisy with the other COOL rides you have??
Hope to see U at a show or two next year...

Even though I'm working on a bunch of other projects, I am in the middle of rebuilding a turbo 2.3 motor that I would like to drop in the pinto. Powered by a megasquirt ecu for the electronics and a holset hx35 turbo for boost. Will be mated to a T5 or C4 tranny that I have as well...

Very COOL!!
Is that an E6 exhaust manifold???
