Post by: onefarmer on August 22, 2007, 12:06:28 PM
Has anyone who converted from carbed to efi compared the before to after mpg? Any advantage? A few mpgs?

I would review what your end goal is...If it's just going to be a driver, the cost of changing over to fuel injection will cost more than you will save in fuel.  I think you could achieve more bang for the buck with tire diameter changes and desmogging/tuning.

Now if you want performance, go the turbo/fuel injection route.

I don't need performance at least no more than stock. But I can go either way carb or FI, have both availible, and was just wondering if there was any advantage to going FI no turbo. If milage was any better with FI over carb.

I have never seen one with non-turbo EFI, but I would bet with that set-up you will get 35+ 'average' depending on the gears, tranny, state of tune, and HOW you drive it.

I see stock Pintos listed for sale, and the sellers state 30,35, or far more for milage (some with a/t's too). It might be because "back in the day" these were high MPG cars, but good luck getting 25 or better even with TALL gears.

My tan car gets 30+, Connie's car gets 25+. (we don't check it very often)

IMHO: EFI is FAR better on all points.

I had a 77 "back in the day" I ussually got 25-27 mpg when I had a stock engine egr disabled. Got 27-29 with a header 2 1/4 exhaust and head shaved .060.

I have now a 78 that I am working on and I can most any thing with it.  I have many other parts availible: carbed, FI,  still have to old .060head, even a carbed turbo, but no FI turbo.

I have a big fat Taurus 3.0 that gets about the same mpg as my old Pinto and got to wondering.
A Pinto is smaller some lighter and seems like someone might have done a swap and compared carb to FI, even carbed to turbo FI.

Was that average or highway?

My mom's 77 Pinto 2.3 A/T would average in the low 20's.

BTW: My Buick Ultra (S/C 3800 SII) gets 29 MPG on long trips fully loaded with cargo.

Average with maybe 60-70% highway type driving. I'm a farmer in the country so not much city driving. It was a 4sp and if I remember correctly 2.73 gears. I remember thinking it was pretty steep.

My mother had nearly the same car only with power steering but I don't know the gearing. She drove like a granny but would get to the speed limit and she was consistant with 25mpg
