I will have a 2 1/2 inch pipe and I am looking for muffler recommendations. I don't want it real loud, more mellow would be better....
OH yeah this is N/A right now, when I add the turbo the muffler might change. Not sure but that is far enough down the road not to worry about it.
Thanks
jim
hey there hellfire. i got the exhaust done on my 77 trunk model done bout a month ago and what i did was a 2 1/4 and a turbo muffler, ok the 2.3 isnt turbo but will be soon. the muffler is 4'' high and 9'' long. i didnt want the car to be loud either and it sounds good. any muff will do, you can go to midas or sears for that matter. with the 2 1/2 pipe, any muffler should do fine. the 2.3 is breathin darn good w/ a 2 1/2 pipe. tony v

Thanks for the info. I thought I was going to have a 2 1/4 pipe also but when I cut the cone off the ranger header it ended up as 2 1/2. A friend of mine recommended the Farm & Fleet store as he has used them before.

I think the issue you will have is a non-chambered one will work better for a turbo (better power), but will be louder on a N/A engine than a chambered one.
It really comes down to your priority.

Good point.... Right now it will stay N/A until I get all the systems up and running and add the 5 spd. Then I can think about installing my turbo and maybe a custom exhaust. Sounds like I am goin to go turbo muffler.

Hey Jim, I HAD a chambered muffler on my Turbo motor. When I made my 2½" D.P. I put a Cut-Out on it. Well when I would go to the track and remove the Block Off plate I would drop about 5-7 psi. So once this car is done and gets the muffler it will NOT be a chambered muffler.
Just my 2¢.

i ran a chambered muffler ( a walker ) not sure about the part # (#21395 I think. old walker replacement for turbo corvair) back in the 70's on a turbo 2.0 and NEVER had any problem running 20+ lbs of boost in any gear.
removal of the muffler and running straight pipe made it too loud (especially inside the car) and didn't restrict boost in any way at all. it did make it MUCH harder to control.
Remember, this is back in 71 - 72. no such thing as waste gates, fuel injection or electronics to anywhere near the extent that such 'tools' are available these days.
i wish i had available then what is available to you guys these days
Ahhh the old Walker mufflers, brings back some great memories. I had a 69 Mustang w/351 windsor and 4 spd. Had a set of dual 48" walker glasspaks. At idle and at part throttle it was very quiet but at full throttle it could sing. Oh so sweet......
You are right, with all the advances we have today makes you wonder how we ever made any horsepower.... ; )

good old Americn ingenuity !!
I ran that Walker turbo muffler on my 71 for a while but found it to be too loud. It had a NA 2.0L with mild cam, header, and a 2.5" exhaust system. At idle it was okay but when accelerating, the sound would attract too much attention. Even had a street racer Camaro want to race me one night (probably thought I had a V8). I put the factory muffler back on even though I know it hurt performance. When you get the turbo on, the turbo will silence the exhaust some.
i still say that a 16-20" straight through W/turbo at the back sounds best.

What kind of sound does that produce????
jim
a little throaty a little mellow not too loud inside the car and about the best you can do for a street car that you have to live with

Did Tony say that? Turbo at the back? Long distance to blow hot air....but wait...it's Tony...it'll work!!
Tony is such a good sport, I give him 9 kinds of heck.
