Title: Changing the motor in my Pinto....
Post by: Chevelle Kid on August 15, 2007, 10:17:52 PM
And I wanted to put a 2.8L V6 from a Ranger/Bronco II in it. I was wondering if it would work? And I was wondering where I could get the motor mounts? Would I have to replace the tranny that's in it?

My car is a '71 Pinto with a 1.6L I4 and a 4spd. Runs fine but not enough ooomph for me.

Here it is:

Well, I would surmise to guess that you could use engine mounts out of a later model Pinto (74 and up) that came with a 2.8 V6, But I also know the forward part of the engine bay was different those years, so I am not sure what all you would need.  If these guys can stuff 289s and 302s in there, that little 171 cube V6 should fit just fine.  I am sure many things will need to be custom manufactured by you or someone you know or have access to.  I wish you lots of luck, and keep us updated.  It only takes one person to do it another way to show that 'yes it CAN be done'.
By the way, if you pull the 1600, you can probably sell it to Pintony...   We all know it's only a matter of time before he figures out how to turbo one of them!

i have had a couple of 2.8 and2.9's in rangers..my advise ..they are great to get radiators out of . The  2.8's to me are a lame engine..maybe go for a 2000cc pinto engine

The 2000 is a great motor!!! they can easily make150-175 hp and still be streetable. when i was 17 I bought a 74 with a bad 2000 for $25  shortly after that my brother yanked his 2000 out of his 914 Porshe and it got a great home in my capri..I should call him and see if he still has the motor..

the daughter blew the motor up in her Mustang II which had the 2.8 V6...so if you need front sump, bellhousing etc. let me know...we went with a 2.3... 4 cylinder

V6 Why? 2.3 turbo is the only way to go today, there cheap just about a bolt in & make 300+ Hp easy... In a 71 pinto that's a 11 sec street car @ 25+ MPG....
